New Car Ideas

Ok so I'm looking at purchasing a new car at the moment. Currently driving a 96 polo which was fine up until recently but doing a good bit more travelling now so looking at getting something better. Rough price range would be from 2,000 - 3,500. Have looked at some Golfs and Boras, any advice on what to look for / watch out for with these? Very much open to suggestions. Would love an Audi A4 but would need to upgrade budget for that. Parents financing with repayments depending on the cost so if a good low mileage bargain was around I may be able to look at something newer. Need any more info just ask.

    Thanks!

What sort of mileage will you be doing? And do you need to budget for insurance too?

Thanks for the replies. Should have said I would be hoping to find something in around the Munster area preferably. Mileage wouldn't be high for most, around 10,000 a year roughly I would be doing. The polo is struggling with the long journeys though so hence the need to upgrade. Have money aside for insurance and tax so provided they don't go sky high that should be ok. Probably shouldn't go over a 1.6l engine to keep the tax and insurance reasonable?

The 1.4 petrol engine is worse than useless. Not only is it slow, but it is rather unreliable. Those engines can suffer from piston slap from as low as 100,000 miles. Plus because they're so underpowered they'll have had the crap driven out of them just to cruise at an adequate pace. Oh and the gearboxes aren't the best in them either.

The 1.6 has gearbox issues (since it has the same gearbox as the 1.4) but the engine is pretty much bulletproof as well as having more power.

Thoughts please? Would the 1.8 mondeo be very heavy on petrol?
The Bora although a little more expensive could work out cheaper long term?

I have an 03 1.8 mondeo. I average about 35mpg on the longer runs but it is heavy on fuel around town.

I'm sorry but the 307 is not a good car, plus it is spectacularly unreliable.

Also 70 bhp is not what makes an engine "great" in my book - that's about the same as what old school non turbo diesels used to have:)!

Mondeo was dodgy as they come, had a friend have a look at it down that way. Dodgy starter, hadn't been taxed in a long time and was still on the road and covered in scratches. might narrow my search to the golfs and boras..

    Why VAG?

What about a Corolla? Or Civic if you're that way inclined?
