Budget changes affecting forestry

    any opinions on the impact on forestry following the budget?...

    in general the vibe is good it seems, grants and premiums left uncut...but road grant under serious review and could go from €45 to €35 or even €30/metre. also the woodland improvement scheme (tending of broadleaves) is under review and promises to come back as a very limited version of itself.

    Surely roads are becoming as important as afforestation grants? most roads have a massively positive cost/benefit result as quite often a little bit of roading releases a lot of timber into the industry

    Tending of broadleaves is an easy target as its hard to measure exactly when and what the benefits will be, having said that i reckon we're gonna have a lot of rubbish hardwoods on our hands in 10-20 years time if tending isnt continued. less tending will also mean less firewood which will drive up demand for oil/coal/gas/turf/briquettes....all either imported or not sustainable

    Every time oil increases (which it will ever increasingly)......then every other fuel will also including the lowest quality firewood.

    What have roads to do with forestry or woodland?

    roading as in building harvest or management roads to facilitate timber extraction and management

    as of today the woodland improvement scheme (tending + thinning of hardwoods) is reopened without any changes to the previous working of the scheme

    road grant is also reopened but with changes;

    allowance down from €45 to €35 per linear metre
    allocation down from 25m to 20m per hectare
    payments to be made net of VAT regardless of applicants status
