    Hi Guys,

I am deciding weather or not to get rid of sky and change to UPC.

I have rang sky and they offered me 25% discount to stay(would have to take out new 12 month contract), but what i'd like is to add a sports channel maybe for a few football matches. If I add sky sports 1 it will cost me an extra €4.50 (after 25% reduction) to the €33 i am paying, so €37.50 for Sky sports 1, all the sports channels 1,2,3,4, ESPN would cost €50.25, but with Digital Max+ on UPC I will get setanta, espn, america, classic for €35.57

I'd just like thoughts on comparassion between sky sports 1 V setanta, espn for football matches, surely there is more on setanta and espn combined than on sky sports1, but i'd like to make sure before I cancel.

Just to add if I dont leave, or add any channels will cost me after 25% reduction €24.75 a month, down from €33. Is it worth the guts of €10 reduction to stay with sky or €10 extra to UPC for a few more sports channels?

Im in a pickle and would like a few suggestions please.

    Thanks,

I have much the same deal with Sky and am paying them about 50e and I have all the Sky sports channels and ESPN ( they come free with sports ) I also pay Setanta 16e a month making it 66e in total but if you wanted all of that with UPC you would have to pay 69.11 for Max and Sports and you would only get Setanta Ireland as Setanta 1 is a extra 15e

Now if you take Sky sports out then you be better off with UPC as you would still get ESPN and Setanta Ireland but most of the big games are shown on Sky Sports

    Hope this helps

Setanta Ireland is free on UPC,problem is they don't always show live Premier League on that channel and have it on Setanta 1 instead which costs €15 a month on UPC:eek:

Sky have a better service for sports fans, the interactive service is brilliant, especially for Champions League with their match choice.

All ESPN channels are free now with Sky Sports, afaik UPC only give you one of them.

As was said in the previous post Sky actually works out cheaper.

Go for all the Sports Channels on Sky and push them for the best discount you can get;)

As I've said before: Sky is best for tv. UPC is best for broadband.

    From UPC website:
ESPN, ESPN America & for our HD customers, ESPN HD. Enjoy FA Cup and Aviva Premiership Rugby.

€10.16 a month if added to Sky Sports or Setanta, €15.25 a month on its own.
Setanta 1 : Premier League matches, FA Cup, domestic soccer and more.€ 15.25 a month

@Campo, I pay Setanta €8.49 a month.Just ring 'em and say you are cancelling.Viola instant discount.I ring every 3 months when my half price deal is due to expire.During the Summer I pay a fiver.

Cheers Zerks keep on meaning to cancel Setanta as been honest 16e a month for 2 channels is very expensive, will try that trick today

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I was of the impression that you can't get just Sky Sports 1 like the OP is saying/hoping; you get them all (SS1, SS2, SS3 and SS4) for €34 per month.

No you can get just Sky Sports 1 from Sky but then you dont get ESPN Free as you need the full sports pack.

You can also get Sky sports 1 from UPC think it is 20e pm

According to their website you need to take them all, before you could order just one sports channel (A bit pointless imo,Cricket is on Skysports 1 atm,the football was on 2-bit of a bummer if you're stuck with one channel)

Plus if you don't take them all then you don't get ESPN for free.

With the 25% discount Sky were offering the op, his bill would come to €50.25 for Entertainment extra and ALL the sports channels, not a bad deal imo.Plus the op wouldn't be missing any games.

ESPN have rights for 23 EPL games,Setanta have 46.Sky have 105.

UPC's Digital Max offering is poor in comparison to Sky-they have snuck in RTE2 and TG4 kid's schedules as extra channels:sneaky.
As said before,Setanta Ireland don't always show Saturday games, take last Saturday, the United game was on Setanta 1.ESPN don't always show live games either, they had no game on Saturday.

The Manchester United v Bolton was the only FA Premier League game televised live in Ireland last Saturday. Neither EPSN nor Sky had a game. Strange but occasionally happens.

I'd just like thoughts on comparassion between sky sports 1 V setanta, espn for football matches, surely there is more on setanta and espn combined than on sky sports1, but i'd like to make sure before I cancel.

ESPN have rights for 23 EPL games,Setanta have 46.Sky have 105.

Its 33 games AFAIK for Setanta, they don't have 46, they have only one each game week that's played on a Saturday and one on the final Sunday.

Not all of Sky's 115 FAPL games are on Sky Sports 1 - the majority are, but you'll find find they are occasionally moved to Sky Sports 2.

Here's a summary of who basically has what in terms of football (if that's all your interested in):

    Sky
    ----
    - FA Premier League - Super Sunday, Monday Night Football, Saturday lunchtime KOs, midweek games.
    - Scottish Premier League - including all Old Firm derbies
    - Home internationals for the Republic of Ireland (including friendly games that aren't on RTÉ), Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales and some away and other internationals.
    - Football League
    - Football League Cup
    - LFP Premiera Division (aka Liga BBVA, aka La Liga)
    - Copa del Rey
    - UEFA Champions League (except game that's on ITV)
    - Irish League

    ESPN
    - FA Premier League - Saturday evening KO
    - FA Cup (second pick)
    - Scottish Premier League (but no Old Firm debris)
    - UEFA Europa League (not on satellite in Ireland)
    - Serie A
    - 1.Bundesliga
    - Erdevisie (mostly tape-delayed/highlights)
    - MLS

    Setanta
    - FA Premier League - 1 Saturday 3pm KO each week
    - FA Cup
    - UEFA Champions League (after RTÉ/TV3 pick)
    - UEFA Europa League (after 3e pick)
    - League of Ireland
    - Setanta Sports Cup
    - EA Sports Cup (late rounds)
    - MLS
    - England home internationals
    - Blue Square Bet Premier
Take your pick at what you want, if the FA Premier League is your main interest, you will probably find Sky Sports 1 your best bet but beware that programming may get switched to other channels and you might want to take all the Sky Sports channel instead.

Cheers, lads thats some good information. ICDG for the detailed report :D

I dont think my budget will allow me go for the €50 sky sports package.

So what Im looking at is either UPC or going with sky sports and hope they show the majority of Prem league on SS1.

Will have a read of that list again ICDG and see which I think is best.

    Thanks,

    FIRE

No harm ringing Sky and asking for SS1,they might even give you a better deal if you mention you're considering UPC;)

Have a look in the soccer forum aswell;);)

cancel sky sports and stream all the football you can watch - plenty of forums will give good website addresses.

I am on the basic, €25, package and I rang up Sky the other day to see about adding Sky Sports and they quoted me an extra €34 per month. That seems like an awfully high price for 4 sports channels. Anyone know of any offers from Sky as both my brother and father got all the channels (world package) late last year for around half price for 6 months, or one year not sure which, but I cannot find any mention of this now.

It's €34 for 6 channels now, offers are usually only given by Retentions in an effort to keep customers who are considering leaving.
As you rang Sky then they assumed you were willing to pay the going rate.

according the skys website when ordering packages you can order just sky sports 1 or 2 on their own or the entire package. great if you just watch the footy as rest are only used really for international games or cricket .

no winning really, upc comes with setanta and that espn standard but as others say sky is a better service .
im debating switching to sky id end up paying more but least id get sky go!
upc in my opinion is a good service so pros and cons to both.
