Ordering from the states

I just tried to order some sports drink and electrolytes from the states.

The goods cost just over $50.
The shipping cost would have been $67.:eek::eek:

Needless to say, I cancelled the order. I have ordered from the states before, even from that same web site. I never paid anything near that much, that is so far out of it, it's beyond ridiculous.

But, I have heard a few similar stories recently. Does anyone know why shipping costs from across the Atlantic have gone stratospheric, and is there an alternative?

Sign up with US Buyers Club, run by an Irish couple in the US, costs €35 per year. They are experts in loop holing around international deliveries and minimizing/avoiding import duties, will even source products for you, have the goods shipped to them and then they forward.
    Save on Shipping

Shipping from the US to Ireland can be expensive especially if the company dispatching the items don’t have your interests in mind. Most sites will ship in a format that suits them, not one that suits you. They will also ship with whoever they have a agreement with, not the one that offers you the best rates.

We can make considerable savings for you by repacking your order into as small as possible a box or envelope. Shipping companies charge based not only on weight, but also on the dimensions of the package.

A simple example of this is a tees shirt we recently repacked. It came to us in a box big enough for a pair of shoes. We repacked in it an envelope and saved the customers $15 on shipping. The tee shirt only cost $8!

    Order Consolidation

Another service we provide is consolidating your orders into a single package. We will store your internet orders for up to a month. When the month is up, we repack all of your items into a single package. As there is a minimum charge per package, this again saves you on shipping.

Saving money on shipping of course means more money for shopping!

I think we need to be very careful to avoid implying that legitimate businesses engage in illegal activities like "avoiding import duties". The business owners are very clear about Customs & Taxes on their web-site.

Avoiding import duties is perfectly legal. Evading import duties is not. You should be careful to avoid implying someone else is implying something which is perfectly legal :D

Yep example of minimizing cost are breaking orders down to smaller deliveries and removing unnecessary packing to reduce delivery costs.
