How much did you spend on your wedding dress?

Went dress shopping with my sister today. In two shops they wouldn't even let us near the sale rails. She tried on some stunning dresses but 1600-2200 is mad money for a dress (in my opinion). We are going shopping again tomorrow and will be definitely looking at sale rails. Just wondering though can she really expect to get a dress for less? Also she is hard pressed for time as wedding is in 6 months

Why wouldn't they let you near the sale rails?

Where are you based? The Bridal Outlet in Baldoyle has dresses for less than that. There's also a place in Blanchardstown called Carey Bridal Boutique that sells dresses for less than €1000.

mine was €700 inc alterations reduced from €1800. From the sale rail! ex-sample, was practically brand new. not a thing wrong with it. the only thing needed was a couple of the beads were loose under the arm, and they were sorted out, dress was like brand new.
Sale rail is the way to go - you can get great bargains.

6 mths is loads of time, usually takes 12-16wks to order in, so once you get pick one within the next 8 weeks you'll be fine.

In Waterford but we weren't shopping there. Every shop said she would need to pick dress in the next week. They all seemed to be very busy as we found it difficult to get appointments. One shop said it takes 7-9 months to order dress!

got mine off the rail as a last season sample and got more then 2k off it.
Look in all the shops and definitely look at the sale rails:)
on adverts.ie there are often new ones too.

If you're looking in Dublin at all, Barnardos have a shop in Dun Laoighre (SP). They're brand new unique dresses donated to and designed specially for Barnardos by designers (I'm not sure who specifically, but my partner has done videos for them and is sending me to the shop when I get to acutally looking for a dress!)
They're fanstastic value by the sounds of it :D

I got mine in Baldoyle (Dublin), it is an outlet store which is linked with Moreland (Clarehall, Dublin). For the Bridal Outlet you don't need an appointment and they are brilliant, but if you are going on a Saturday morning be there at opening time as they get busy. My dress was €720, and went up to €800 with alternations - I was chuffed with it. In my opinion you only wear it once, for less than 24 hours so don't blow the budget!

Anyway, if you are in Dublin call in, they are brilliant!

My sister in law got flower girl dresses from buyandsell.ie for a really good price, a few minor adjustments and they were beautiful. Another friend is getting married in Kilshane House later in the year and they are on the look out now too. Just had a look and they have some beautiful wedding dresses too, may be worth looking, what size is your sister looking for?

Mine is €1900. I never thought that I’d spend that much on a dress. I went viewing with my friends in Madrid and only made an appointment with Pronovias to get a feel for what styles I liked, not thinking of actually buying anything, but I really liked one particular one. More viewing with my sisters in Malaga (where the shop didn’t have the dress and the woman there really annoyed my sisters). Finally I went to Sevilla with a friend. That is wedding shopping heaven, they have two full streets of wedding shops & boutiques. I saw plenty that were nice and a lot cheaper, but I was comparing all of them with the one I’d seen in Madrid. The shop in Sevilla had it, I tried it on again and went ahead and ordered it. Yes, logically it’s a waste of money, but…

If you're prepared to trot to Cork, then I passed the Moderne in Patrick St. today. They had Maggie Sottero dresses on sale from E450...

I presume they're ex-sample, but the dresses looked nice.

A friend of mine got a brand new dress here for 200 euro. She said she just told the girl what she was looking for and the first dress she showed her was the one. Had her perfect wedding dress in 20 mins

55 euro on ebay. And according to herself looks absolutely perfect after a few alterations etc which is the norm anyway.

I got mine for 300 quid there. It was worn by a model at a fashion show so it wasn't "brand new" but it hadn't been married.

Definitely worth a look in there.

I spent well over 2 grand :( Hopefully I'll be able to sell it afterwards and make some of that back. I was tempted to go down the online route and get it made but it's just too detailed a dress to do that, I couldn't risk it. It was the only dress I really liked and to me it's worth it even though I still cringe when I think of how much I spent on it but of all things to spend a lot of money on the dress is the big thing for me so I don't regret it. I just wish I'd fallen in love with a cheaper dress! :D

I'll be getting my dress made by a local dressmaker who specialises in 40s/50s style of dresses, completely bespoke. Will cost me in the region of €600, and no waiting around for 6 months either :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,251 ✭✭✭cyning

Mine was €850 an ex-sample dress... reduced from €1700. The alterations were another €100 on top of that... Sample dresses are well worth it there was no way I personally could have justified €1700 for a dress for one day: I specifically waited for sales!!

    Wow, sounds amazing!

My dress is €1299, the shrug is €249 and the veil is €200. I was going to get a veil from Dino Direct, but got carried away in the shop. I'm a fool!

Yeah the shop I got my dress in wanted nearly 500 quid for the matching veil! FFS! I'll be picking that up online I think!

The veils are a complete and utter rip off.

I got mine online at www.theweddingveilshop.co.uk
Mine was cathedral length, with chrystals on it. Was just under €80 all in. My tiara was from debenhams, during one of their sales and with all the discounts cost €40. Service was prompt and you can ring them and speak to someone if you need advice or questions answered.
The veil was exactly the same as the one in the shop which was €250, and the tiara wasn't a kick in the arse away from the one I saw in the shop either - shop one was €180. So I saved over €300 and very little difference in the end result! :D

I was pressed for time too so I had to buy off the rack because the bridal shops said you should leave at least 6 - 9 months to order it and with alterations etc.

Mine wasn't in the sales (Baldoyle Bridal Outlet) but was off the rack. It was €875 and they wouldn't give us any discount for it being off the rack which I thought was a bit much. Their excuse was they would have to order another one in...!!! On top of that, alterations were €200 and I too made the spur of the moment mistake in ordering the veil there and then which was also €200.

If I had the time and patience, I would have definitely ordered online.

any shop that tells you it takes 6-9 months to order is taking the mickey. they're just trying to panic you into making a quick decision. Unless its a very special/ unusual/ unique dress 3-4 months is usual and truth be known you can get them quicker but understandably a lot if shops don't accept orders for less than this because if for any reason there is a delay they don't want an irate bride

Hey OP, if you are willing to travel to Cork then I'd suggest paying a visit to Marie in the Ivory Rose in Passage West (east cork). She has a fantastic range of sale rail dress, check them out on the website - some of the photos dont do the dresses justice though but at least the prices are listed!http://theivoryrose.ie/index_files/TheIvoryRoseBridalRoomPhotoGallerySale.htm

I'm getting married in July and only went looking for my dress in Nov....was scared ****less by some places...telling me I HAD to order my dress by the end of that month. Went over to Marie, and she reassured me i had PLENTY of time. Ordered my dress from her and it'll be here at the start of April. so im a :) customer

my dress was on sale 550e. got it in tracey bridal in galway. i wouldnt pay the bridal shop price for a veil so got one online for about 20e. looked lovely. shoes were the brand pink, by paradox and cost about 70e. got a hair clip in accessorize to jazz up the veil. all in all my entire outfit cost less than my mothers dress. and it looked fab on the day:) i got bracelet in wallis on sale for 10e and earrings and chain in debenhams which also happened to be on sale at the time.

I got my dress on sale with some alterations to the style, therefore reduced from 2500 to 1500. I love it and am totally delighted to have invested that much into it. I've most of it paid off now over the last few months.
My friend got hers off the rack, it's a bit big so she's getting it taken in, but it's fabulous and makes no matter that it wasn't made to order. So shop around, and don't be pressured into buying something you're not loving yourself.

First time poster but long time follower! For me, dress shopping was not easy. I only took one friend with me and visited two shops. De Stafford in Dublin but I did feel as if I was left alone searching through the dresses: no recoomendations, no advice...second shop was Town Bride where the service was out of this world! I fell in love with the first dress I tried on. It cost 1395 euro. Can not wait to see it again!

I got my dress off the sale rail for 500 euro in Amore Bridal in Youghal, Cork. The lady in the shop Camilla was extremely helpful as i wasn't sure what style etc would suit me.
The dress will need altering to fit me, slightly too big and is in perfect condition, delighted with it.
Was the 2nd shop i went into.

    200 euro, debenhams

*cheap skate, but for a dress i was only going to wear for one day, it was well worth it*

Wouldn't buy a dress for 1500 that's more than my engagement ring cost and i wear that every day....

I'd recommend amore bridal in youghal too - I ended up going there on my own and Camilla was really helpful. Picked my dress up from there last week and just delighted with it!
