No offence intended to any male Colt drivers! I'm looking into buying a Colt but nearly everyone I've talked to say it's a girls car?

No offence, but are you really insecure enough to care? Grow a pair, drive what you like. ;)

Sadly yes :( haha, a Honda Civic Vtec Hatchback is what I'd like to drive :D just this is a good price and I'd say insurance would be low on it for a learner driver

If you like it, drive it and screw what anybody else thinks.

    YES, if it was pink

I wouldn't see a Colt being considered a girls car tbh.

No, I've seen plenty of lads driving Colts, nothing wrong with them at all. Good car.

Ah, the bi-monthly 'girl's car' thread. Regular as clockwork.

current model is certainly a girls car, a guy can get away with an old model Colt.

I had a 99 Mirage (import version of the Colt) hatchback and then a 98 coupe version and never thought they were girly? Of course in those days the Civic was still a lads car too!

The newer models though.... mmmaybe yes :p

yeah, no problem. As a car though, most of the other Japanese hatches do it better. my ex had an 03 and it was like being in the mid 80s inside.

The only people I know who drive them are pensioners which means that they

were bought new from a main dealer
    don't get driven that much
get serviced whether they need it or not
have lots of things replaced which don't need replacing

all meaning that a good second hand one would be great for any person!

That is so way off, they've been the skangers chariot of choice for decades.

Any small car is considered a ladies car by most men because apparently lady drivers cant handle bigger cars. LOL.

Would any exhaust fot this car or is it Mitsubishi exhausts or what? Quote 'theres a hole in exhaust'

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 456 ✭✭Bonesy.

Is this an ok car for a learner driver with its problems:'hole in exhause and abs light on dash only problens with it. abs brakes are fixed just the light needs to be turned of and i dont have a dyno kit to do it. ' or would this be a burden left in the garden?

Buy a car without problems, if it was a simple fix, it would be fixed.
    There's plenty cars out there.

Check some insurance quotes before you go for it. I'm pretty sure the smallest engine Colts of that era sold here with is the 1.3l 75BHP one which might have higher insurance costs for a learner. I know in the UK they're normally rated a couple of insurance groups up.

The Bangernomics thread is here, just posted up one myself thats under €400. I would nearly buy it myself.

Not a girls car.. they can be got for cheap and are good on fuel, insurance, reliable and all that.

    Screw what other people think.

Well unless its the cabriolet version (2005 onwards),..... i would consider that to be a girls car alright.

My first car was a 96 Colt it was lovely, the newer model is an example of how to ruin a decent litle car, they are vile looking!

Nope you got that all wrong it has nothing at all to do with "lady drivers cant handle bigger cars" its the fact majority of women dont give a crap about cars and just want a little run around thats cheap to run, they also do tend to prefer smaller cars lookswise. No one in here made a sexist remark as women cant handle big cars  bit ironic the first person to do so was a woman :p.

Anyways, a '99 Colt was my first car and I loved it. Great little reliable car that is nippy enough. Mine didn't have ABS though!

Mine eventually developed a hole in the exhaust too funnily enough and it sounded ridiculous. Way, way too loud.
You wouldn't need to replace the whole exhaust though in most cases. If you did, it would probably amount to more than the cost of the whole car to buy one and get it fitted..

Anyways, plenty of nice Colts around out there so don't settle on a shiitbox that needs lots of work.

well I drive a Mitsubishi colt 1999 model as that was all I could afford at the time €700 and it's a nifty little thing and have it now 2 years and not had 1 problem yet as it's a reliable car. as for a girls car, lol i don't get that part as it looks more of a male car. of course i would like a bigger bmw flash car but thats not possible so this little lunchbox will have to do me and it does the job perfectly fine. great little car. :D

I think the 2008 onwards look worse than the 2005-2007 ones which are ok IMO. They facelift it round that year.

If it was once a month they might have their answer already... :pac:

I think the old shape Colt's are fine, if not the skangers beginner car a bit too much for my liking. The newer shape while still not exactly being a girls car, is rubbish looking do I'd not buy one for that reason.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,377 ✭✭✭zenno

I don't get this rubbish about it being a skangers car as it is a car in the proper sense of the word, it gets you from A to B and beats the hell out of having to rely on public transport. I looked all over the car and it does not have the word skanger printed anywhere on the vehicle  so to call it a skanger car is very childish as in reality the 1999 gl colt looks ok imo and is a very reliable car. the first thing i see when i look at my car is great i can go anywhere when i want and know it's damn reliable and won't let me down.

In these days of recession and the price of petrol and tax and everything else to run it you would think that people would be happy just to own one maybe the people that think it's a skanger car are actually skangers themselves, it sure looks that way. :D

    That sure told us...

The reason it has somewhat of a reputation for being that are the reasons you yourself stated... Initial outlay and running costs, all being low. Plus it has a somewhat of a sporty look and isn't too much of a slouch either (not in Micra territory).
It's been the starter car of choice for many a boy racer for years, it's not a new thing but that doesn't mean every owner is a skanger, just like any car that has a reputation.

    *drives an ASBO* :pac:

Old Colt not a girls car, id say you see more lads driving it than girls.

New colt 3 door 2005 onwards is strange looking but ok...

but as someone else said from 2008 onwards they facelift it and it looks dodgy.

The 5 door new colt is fugly though. Very fugly.
