Triax 112 STB now or wait?

Don't know much about Saorview but learning from boards as I go along!

Would Triax 112 STB be the best one on the market at the moment (as it gets some good reviews on the web)?

Or should I wait closer to the switchover to maybe get a better one or even a cheaper one?

    Thanks.

Do not buy this box. The recording facility on the box doesn't work properly. Recordings set on the box more than a few hours in advance will fail. I'd go for the Walker one in PowerCity here: http://www.powercity.ie/?par=10-23-WP11DT&brands=WALKER

Does the Walker have line out, to connect a second TV?
I seem to remember reading ages ago that you would still need a second STB, if your TV doesn't have an MPEG 4 tuner?

I really don't want any more boxes in my living room, if I can help it!
    Any advice appreciated.

The Walker box doesn't have a UHF modulator to convert the Saorview signal to a form that can be used by another tv's analogue tuner, if that's what you mean.

Why would you want an analogue output? The whole point of Saorview is to go digital with the much improved picture quality. Why throw it away?

The whole point of rf out from a Sky box is to share an expensive subsciption to other TVs. There are no subsciptions with Saorview, so why bother. Enjoy the enhanced PQ. It is a once off charge.

It's not the charge that bothers me.
It's the space needed for another STB. I already have a DVD, Two satellite STBs, Playstation, and Wii. Add the family pc in another corner, and you get the picture - too many boxes and cables.
I could get rid of one of the Sat boxes, but the OH loves the EPG on a certain providers box!frown.gif

I'd happily pay double for one STB that I could set up for multiroom.

I did supply a STB that hid behind the TV out of sight and cost €45, but they are all gone now. If you PM me, I'll point you to a similar product.

The Triax TR112 is the best on the market, the recording is excellent and you can watch another programme while recording another unlike the walker! The TR112 is a bit more expensive but its far better, the walker is the same box as the Bush,Alba and so on all made in the same factory cheaply made!!

I remember reading somewhere from somebody who was recording with an external hard drive that certain drives (especially the big, powered ones) had a tendency to go into standby if unused for more than X minutes or hours.

I wonder if this is what's causing the problem reported here with the Triax 112.

I also remember reading somewhere that said hard drives were fairly easily resettable to an "always-on" condition.

The other theory, mentioned frequently here, is that many memory sticks don't work well with recorders.

Wait for the first ‘Saorview’ approved HD Combi receiver: Triax TSC114. It's being launched later this month.
