    Hi,

I have a 2006 Volvo s40 1.6 diesel. I have recently heard that Volvo recommend the particle filter be changed on them after a certain number of miles. Has anyone more knowledge on this?

    Dpf replaced at 120,000km
    Oil replaced every 60,000km.
Volvo have reduced price of dpf in the last year!

I wouldn't replace it before it goes, if it's still functional keep driving it.

I assume as it's The PSA diesel they mean the the eloys (sp) fluid. The type of dpf used in that engine requires an additive to aid combustion.

Either way either bazz26 or row on here would be good to ask.

DPF has come down to abot 440 plus VAT from Volvo... Try peugeot for the oil although I think the VOLVO dealer is around the same price or maybe even marginally cheaper..

The additive fluid peugeot use is eolys powerflex and citroen use
Infineum F7995....tbh they are both the same.

Not so sure about volvo/ford but i'm guessing they use the same additive as
they all share the same engines.

Peugeot/Citroen display a "low additive" warning when the fluid it nearly empty, the additive tank hold 3 litres + and usually needs topping up around 160k kms and Peugeot/Citroen usually replace the dpf at this stage.

As EPM said above don't go replacing the dpf unless it is blocked/starting to block...any good independent garage with good level diagnostic equipment should be able to tell you how the filter looks on live data...filter load...differential pressure etc.

I am running a 407 1.6 hdi with around 180k kms on its original dpf with no
    problems....:)

Using good quality (low ash) oil plays a big part in the prevention of a dpf blocking before its time....;)

Having a replacement interval on a DPF probably seemed like a good idea in the theoretical computer simulated world of a car factory but it certainly doesn't work in the real world. There are too many variables involved to be able to state with any certainty the mileage that a DPF will last for. The usage pattern (or journey types) of the car, the individual driving style and the standard and frequency of servicing will all make a massive difference to the lifespan of the DPF. In my experience the PSA DPFs aren't all that troublesome, there are loads on our books with well over 100k miles on the original DPF and no sign of any trouble.

The life of the DPF will depend on the type of driving. Constant short journeys where the regeneration cycle cannot reach the required temperature to burn the particals, results in unburnt particals building up and eventually blocking the DPF.

I had to replace the DPF on my old S40 about 18 months and it cost about €1k.
