Very strange laptop behaviour with DVD Drive

    Hi

So I recently did a fresh install of XP and it was a success except for one issue with the DVD Drive - it didn't show up on Device Manager or My Computer. I ran driver genius and downloaded & installed all the drivers - still not recognized.

It had power, and the drive sounded like it was reading stuff... but the laptop just didn't recognize it at all. I tried all the methods online such as registry tweaks etc but nothing worked.

Now I've just installed Daemon tools lite, and my laptop's DVD drive has suddenly shown up in Device Manager and My Computer, fully functional. (no it's not the virtual drive, it's the actual laptop DVD drive!)

Any idea what the hell is going on?!! I plan on selling this laptop and would prefer to find the root cause of this weird incident and fix it permanently.

tl;dr DVD drive not recognized until I installed Daemon tools wtf.

In the Device Manager, is it showing up under 'Unknown Devices'?

If the drive was replaced at any stage with a different model, resetting to factory settings will still be using the old driver - you may have to download and install the driver for your particular drive. No harm in doing this anyway.

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060

Probably related to this kb article. Happens fairly often with XP, its a simple enough registry fix usually

Thanks but as I said in my first post: "I tried all the methods online such as registry tweaks etc but nothing worked."

As I said, after installing Daemon tools, the DVD drive has shown up in the Device Manager. This is what I'm trying to figure out, why did it take DAemon tools to activate the DVD Drive?

daemon tools probably added some generic filters that allowed your drive to be recognised, or overwrote the old ones that were there already.

i just fixed a problem with a mates computer the other day where the drive was disappearing completely.. going into the registry and deleting the 'upper filter' related to the drive sorted it after a quick reboot.

as in the microsoft support link given posted above..
In the navigation pane, locate and then click the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} In the right pane, click UpperFilters.

Note You may also see an UpperFilters.bak registry entry. You do not have to remove that entry. Click UpperFilters only. If you do not see the UpperFilters registry entry, you still might have to remove the LowerFilters registry entry. To do this, go to step 8.
On the Edit menu, click Delete. When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.
In the right pane, click LowerFilters.

Tried that, didn't work. In fact there were no filters to delete at all.

So what would happen if Daemon tools was uninstalled? You see I want to sell this laptop, but not with this DVD drive issue. I'd like to fix it once and for all. What if whoever buys it off me uninstalls Daemon tools and fcuks it up again, I'll have to refund them.

only one way to find out ;)

the drive is obviously working fine you just have a conflict somewhere, it's just a matter of figuring out whats causing it.

I had this the other day on a PC I was working on, the upper filters weren't there either so I went into the BIOS and reset it to default settings and it recognised it again and just reinstalled the driver
