Just wanted to make a post here because, this past year, I started training and soon became a Deputy Superintendent Registrar.

I do Marriages and Civil Partnerships for a City Council in the UK and work directly for the Council in the Registrars. I've conducted about 30 marriages since August last year.

Anyway, although there are differences between Irish and UK Marriage law, I wanted to post here just in case anyone wanted to ask any questions or queries and I was ever able to help. Since I'm involved with the profession now and I've been posting here for years anyway.

You can make a sticky out of the post if you like or I can answer PMs. If I can help, through my first hand experience and knowledge of the position, then I will do my best to assist you. If not, sorry to have wasted your time.

Hi. I've booked my date with the registrar for august. Next month I have to go in for the meeting with them and I need to give them the name of the solemniser. As i'm having the ceremony in the registry office do I have to find a solemniser or do they provide this.
    Thank you.

A recipe for disaster imo making this the "go to" thread. A UK based, UK registered registrar giving advice on Irish marriages.

If you're getting married in the registry office I'd assume the registrar will be the solemiser.

have you been told by the registry office, that the day you want is free?

if it is you dont need to do anything.

if it is not free and you need to get married elsewhere, you will need your own solemniser.

all the information is here http://www.groireland.ie/getting_married.htm

i also dont think sticking this is thread is a good idea, the rules in England are different to those in Ireland
    .

which part are you not sure about?
The one I think most people find confusing is the meeting with a registrar to give your 3 month notice of intention to marry vs. the meeting with a registrar who will marry you. Anyone getting married in Ireland, whether Catholic church, civil (HSE registrar) or other "religious" (including non-HSE solemnisers) needs to give 3 months notice to any HSE registrar:
    http://www.hse.ie/eng/services/Find_a_Service/bdm/How_to_register_a_birth/Registrars_of_Births_Deaths_and_Marriages.html
It does not have to be your local one or the one from where you intend to marry. You call and make an appointment and they tell you what documentation to bring.
By this stage you should know who will be your marriage solemniser, that is the person actually marrying you on the day, as you need to give their name on your marriage application form. This is either your priest, the civil HSE registrar (not necessarily the same one as the one to whom you give the 3 month notice) or other "religious" solemniser, such as Tom Colton from the Spiritualist Union.
If you're getting married in the registration office, then you just need to agree the time of marriage with that registration office and the name of HSE registrar who will be marrying you there. This will be your solemniser.
