Three and Vodafone problems

I have two dongles, Three for personal use and Vodafone for work. Both have been working reasonably well (vodafone used to be very poor but impoved vastly in the past two months or so).
Anyway on Sunday neither would work all day then Three was working that night. Same thing yesterday, neither working all evening/night - blue light flashing on both.
I have a vodafone phone which has good coverage outside (my dongle(s) reside outside as well, upstairs in a tupperware box connected to a wireless router inside) and signal was ok so I managed to tether it and got a decent signal.

Any idea why both Three and Vodafone would go down while my phone signal was ok?

Its possible that Three and Vodafone share a mast site and it was offline or under maintenence. In rural areas, its quite common to share sites and for subscribers not to be covered by overlapping sites.

That's what I suspected but would this doesn't explain why the tethering worked from my vodadfone mobile?
