Went to Dublin today and followed a car in the city centre which veered across the bike lane at every speed bump to (partially) avoid them

    BMW X5!

    what are people like?

Valid practice in Ireland - "even up your shocks".
After all the abuse your nearside shocks take in the country side, you need to give them a rest in the town :D

I'd say if you had to pay for suspension repairs on one you'd avoid the bumps too!:P

Don't forget the speed bump grand prix.
    Straight road, no speedbumps:
Drive down road in 4th at a steady 50 km/h.
Straight road, vicious speedbumps every 100 m:
Arrive at speedbump at 50 km/h, drop down to 2nd and brake sharp.
Once off the bump, floor it and rev to 50 km/h in 2nd, switch to 3rd, until next bump, drop to 2nd and so on.
That is of course just normal driving, as for boyracers and joyriders:
See how fast you can jump the car over said bumps at 6000 rpm in 3rd at 100 km/h without the suspension being ripped out.
Seek out roads with speedbumps especially for that purpose.
And of course, as described in the OP, the speedbump slalom.
So there you have it, speedbumps cause higher revving in cars, swerving, attrack stolen cars driven by dicks, noise and pollution.
I'd say they have failed miserably.
They only exist because PC Nuts never give in, no matter how bad the fail.

I nearly get rear ended at some of the ramps near me when im in the mini. They are the split ones, which you can happily drive over at the speed limit in a normal car. The mini isint wide enough, so have to brake for them.

Speedbump Grand Prix best witnessed at lunch time near a FAS centre as car loads of youngfellas are released after being cooped up all morning.

Always get frustrated being behind a jeep on roads with speed bumps. Everyone will happily do 20mph+ over them, but nooooo, mister big fancy jeep with the suspension to actually handle the bumps has to drop to 5mph and crawl over them as if they were driving a Ferrari and were worried about bottoming out.

Ever hit a speed bump in a 4x4 at a decent pace? I did once in my Pajero Sport, shortly after that my head hit the roof and I took them at a much handier pace from then on.

The ones I enjoy watching are the cars with lowered clearance who have to approach the bumps diagonally at 2kph. One of my neighbours successfully got a settlement out of the Council for "injuries" accrued crossing a ramp.

It's amusing how easily other drivers get frustrated.

I wouldn't actually be surprised if someone did get legitimately injured going over some of the ramps that exist tbh. Considering manufacturers put a lot of thought and effort into suspension design to absorb as much as possible for smooth driving, that ramps exist that can leave you feeling like you need a chiropractor afterwards is an absolute joke

My car is quite low and long I have no intention damaging it over ramps.

When I learned to drive I was told that ramps are there to slow u down u should maintain the same speed between them as u do to get over them.

I saw a video on YT (can't get it here from work) with a Veyron in India having to slow down every 50 metres or so to inch over speedbumps, so all the normal traffic around it could keep up with it easily. The acceleration between speedbumps was impressive, to say the least. Must be a bummer to have a supercar (hypercar) and not be able to use it properly :)

I wouldn't consider speed bumps to be the worst peril a Veyron would face on Indian roads!

The one's in Tyrrelstown are terrible. They're not even sunk into the ground, they were just bolted onto the road. They're the split ones, which they managed to put in place wonky, so you can't go over them smoothly unless you crab crawl. And according to Fingal CC's own guidelines are too high, too close together and too close to bends. Of course we brought these issues up with FCC who politely told us that they were "only guidelines" and couldn't do anything about it.

While I'll agree that they're quite high, they are effective. I don't have any issues with using them. The area needs more in fact to stop idiots using the internal roads, where kids are usually playing, as rat tuns and then I'll be happy.

Punishing everyone because of a few idiots is not the solution.

I do it too (not in the city center though), the Alfa's suspension is too delicate to subject it to major knocks.

It's the catch-all solution to every single problem in Ireland, perish the thought someone might actually have to use their head and think up a creative solution that addresses the problem, rather than just coming up with idiotic sledge-hammer solutions that don't work, but because some pen-pusher wants an early lunch they just get implemented anyway.
Wikipedia has shut down today and if Google had done the same, all research in Irish government departments would grind to a halt.
Google it, Wikipedia it, copy'n'paste, there's your new Irish law/guideline.

I'm sure the multiple people that have had to replace suspension components thank s to the crappy speed bumps would be delighted to see more of them to.

There have been 3 different cars in the household since the speed bumps where put down and Blackhorse Avenue has been on my route in and out of the city for over 10 years, I've never had an issue with suspension, never even required the tracking to be corrected.

These same arguments are trotted out every time during a speed bump thread, I don't know what other people do to do so much damage to their cars.

3 cars and one set of speed bumps doesn't "speak" for the entire population of cars and speedbumps.

Just because they haven't cause YOU any issues, does not mean they don't cause any for others.
