feeding bales

    Hi,

I was thinking of the idea of getting an old diet feeder for feeding silage bales. dont know much about the diet feeders but it might make things easier for feeding, load up the feeder with enough for 2 days and then just leave it in the shed for the 2nd day. as it wouldnt be used for feeding ration all i'd need would be one that feed out chopped bales evenly.

just wondering if anyone out there who is doing this or has tought about it

a tub feeder is the best to handle bales although it might require more power to work than a paddle one ,

dont do it. sounds like your trying to complicate a simple system. cut leafier silage and then you will be able to break the bales easy with a load if you so wish. Silage through a feeder will begin to secondary fermentate the minute its broken up.

a waste of money if you are only feeding bales, are your cattle that lazy that they cant pull it out of the bale.

Dont see how a bale shear is going to spread it out any more evenly, if you were mixing ration or straw through it diet feeder yes but if not what about one of those bale unrollers ? roll out what ever amount they would eat then just feed out the rest the next day, prob wouldnt cost much more than a s/h diet feeder.
