Just wondering I would like to be checked out does a regular GP do this or will he look at me with ten heads if I ask him? Is it something you would need to give advance warning of to him?

any gp can do this. it involves a blood test and a physical exam (gloved finger in the back passage)

you can just book a routine appointment and then discuss your concerns and the gp will do the tests if indicated.

    Hi ronan45,
As the other poster have said, your GP can do a prostate examination, though most will refer on to a specialist if they feel that a DRE (digital rectal examination) is required. The usual initial test done by GPs is a simple blood test, similar to any other blood test, to check your PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) level. If that is above a certain level (varying with your age) then further exploration may be necessary.

Don't worry about your GP. This is a regular medical issue and they will have dealt with this matter with hundreds, possibly thousands, of patients.

If you have concerns, you should see your GP and take it from there. Even if you do have symptoms that you suspect could be from PCa, they could be also as a result of several other 'causes' - only your GP/Consultant can tell you that.

You'll find more info on Prostate Cancer here, on the Irish Cancer Society website. You'll also find a booklet on Prostate Cancer here on the site.

If you'd like to talk, in confidence, to a Cancer Nurse, you can do so on FREEFONE 1800 200 700. The line operates 9-7, Mon to Thurs and 9 to 5 on Fri.

Good luck, and I hope that you don't join the club.
