    Hi Lads,
my father is buying a new car and has narrowed it down to the following list
    • Peugeot 207 1.4HDi
    • Kia Rio 1.4D
    • Renault Clio 1.5dci
    • VW Polo Trendline 1.2TDi
    • Ford Fiesta 1.4 CDTi
    • Citroen C3 1.4HDi

He has €15000 cash and he has a 2006 Kia Rio 1.4 petrol with 140,000 km on the clock.
His main factors that he wants considered are 1. Price, 2 Fuel economy, and based on these factors I would be recommending the VW or the Citroen to him.

    So a couple of Q's -
Which car would you knowledgable people of the Motors forum recommend?
Would he be as well to try to sell the Rio he has privately as opposed to trading it in?
Any pros or cons to buying in the North?
Anything else we should consider for him?

    Thanks guys!

    • Kia Rio 1.4D - my choice
    • Renault Clio 1.5dci - soon to be replaced
    • VW Polo Trendline 1.2TDi - slow/expensive
    • Ford Fiesta 1.4 CDTi - Second choice
    • Citroen C3 1.4HDi! - just don't like it
Rio would be my choice and trade in your car.

you should get a good enough deal

    Are residuals important?
If so go for the VW

I'm neutral on Skoda's but surely a nice Fabia is miles ahead of the rest of the list! and they start t just over €12k

Is the current car a diesel? Is mileage done diesel worthy or is the 'amazing' fuel economy going to be hammered by having to replace expensive parts! Also factor the additional buying costs

Didn't look at the fabia - dont think he's too bothered about it
    Resale value not hugely important

What IS important is price, fuel economy....

What about the Kia Venga? Same underpinnings as the Rio but I'd imagine it would be a bit cheaper and more space...........not stylish though

I'd also go with the KIA.

I'd rule out the 207 as it is about to be replaced by the new 208 below:

Venga is €19-20K IIRC... I like them too.. nice driving position - I had a rental.

I reckon with trade in and negotiation he could possibly get a new/nearly new one

They aren't exactly selling like hot cakes but not a bad car for someone who wants one

Rio is a great car, the only bother I had with it was the view out the rear window was terrible, the worst of all the cars I test drove. you will need parking sensors on it.

The rest were all nice except the Peugeot, I didn't test that one.
C3 I just found a bit boring inside, ride was fine and imo is looking a bit dated now.
Fiesta was nice inside, nice outside,
Polo got the job done, nice car, nothing else to say about it though.
I have driven clios in the past but this year I tried the Modus,
It was a great little drive but maybe too small for your dad.
So out of your bunch I'd go Rio, but make sure he's ok with the visibility issue out the back window first.
Another one you can consider is the Suzuki Sx4, another high riding car with good visibility all round

Thanks for all your help guys - looks like it's down to a straight choice between the Kia Rio and the VW Polo.

Gonna leave it up to himself to make that decision....

One last question - How is the new Rio when compared to it's predecessor (pic below) this is more or less the same car as he has atm, and I cant stand it - think it's very awkward and jerky, with a sh1te interior.

You can get a 1.6TDI in a Fabia if that's of any use?

I'd go with the new Rio, looks well and should give years of trouble free service.

The only thing in common between the new and old Rio is the name.
