Having watched the Golden Globes last night, I noticed that there have been a lot of decent looking mini series that I've either never heard of or never bothered to check out.

I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations as to some decent ones? Are shows like Mildred Pierce, Cinema Verite any good?

I've also been meaning to check out Luther and Sherlock seems to get great review also. Anyone have any other recommendations?

Watched Season 1 of "Luther" and thought it was excellent so I'd watch that.

"Sherlock" : Great modern update on the Sherlock stories. It's smart and witty.

    Also:
"This is England '86" / "This is England '88": Start off with the movie "This is England" and then see the stories of these characters continued on in these powerful mini series. Features some of the finest performances I've seen in years.

If you thought season 1 of Luther was good, you will be blown away with season 2, it was brilliant.
Sherlock was very good too, in fairness the BBC can produce pretty good stuff.

I have started watching "suits" its a new American one I find it entertaining enough.

It's not a recent Mini Series, but I found The Lost Room (Sci-Fi/Drama) pretty good.

Yeah I did see that a few years back and really enjoyed it.

Another one I've seen is Kill Point which is about a bank robbery starring Donne Wahlberg. It was really good too.

Thanks for all the suggestions, I reckon I'll give Luther a go first, it'll be weird seeing Stringer Bell again though :D.

Wow, John Adams looks great and I love civil war era stuff. I don't know how I missed it, thanks for that.

Generation Kill - Underrated Band of Brother -esque view of US invasion of Iraq. Based on book written by embedded journalist. Made by same people as the Wire.

You probably seen it but The West Wing would be my favourite of all, 7 seasons 22 episodes per season, loads to watch. Also the Wire.

    Hardly "Mini" though.

Point taken, there was a good mini series about 2 years ago called "Five Daughters" it was only 5 episodes I think, it was about the murders in Ipswich a few years ago.

A mini series is a continuing story so Sherlock, Luther etc hardly qualify as they are essentially stand alone dramas with common elements.

    Fair point!

In that case: "The Corner". It's by the guys who brought you "The Wire" and, based on a true story, follows the lives of a group of drug-addicts in Baltimore and how their habits impact the lives of those around them. Some great writing and acting performances (including many actors who showed up in "The Wire" subsequently).

Band Of Brothers is a seriously good show. I didn't care for The Pacific as much; I felt it was harder to like the characters. But yeah, Band Of Brothers, epic stuff.

Could you say Freaks and Geeks as it was just one season?
