World Championship Averages Rise 20 in 20 Years

Red Dragon have posted up the top 32 averages seen in the world championships over the last 20 years.

    http://reddragondarts.tumblr.com/post/16008388469/darts-world-championship-averages-rise-20-in-20-years

It's interesting to note that the BDO Worlds in 2001 were top of the list until the PDC beat it in 2009.

And to think that in '79, a 75 average would have done. (Roughly 20 darts / 7 visits).

Since then, the averages have been rising steadily.

For over 30 years the Lakeside 2001 World Championship yielded the best last 32 averages ever seen.

This was only eclipsed in the 2009 PDC World Championships, and has been since in 2010, 2011 and 2012

The moral of the story: If you can’t throw 15 darts every time you step up to the oche you may as well pack up and go home.

and people claim the bdo is still just as good as pdc

proof that since the big clearout to pdc in 07 the pdc is way ahead

It is a handyl indicator of the uselessness of averages as the sole basis for judging a tournament.

Think of the most thrilling tournaments, like Deller's win, which pretty much props up the list. Even this years PDC which many rated as the greatest doesn't make the top 3. I must refer to this next time someone bangs on about averages as my eyes glaze over...

And don't forget that they stood over a foot further back
on the ache in those early years!

That's the averages for the First round in each tournament. Do they have it for Quarter Finals or Semi Finals maybe.

That would be a good view. I love data. I wish they release more data like that into the open.

Does this coincide with the treble areas increasing in size as well as more money ( so more time to parctice when not having a day job)

    Oh absolutely.

    It is all about opinions.

Ultimately, the comparison can only give an insight into averages.

For some, this is the be all and end all. For others, it is not. There may be other factors. There may even be factors which are outside the players control.

Yes there may well be better games with lower averages but theres no disputing that the standard is higher and rapidly rising. Its a fact, and thats what the op was saying.

People will argue lots of things like players have more time to practice etc... but averages are a good way of showing the quality of the current PDC and the ever widening gulf between it and the BDO. This year there was a 7 points in the difference, last year 8. Thats a big difference at any level never mind professional.
