Was looking at buying a santa fe 2.2 with a bit of an engine noise:) Having tried to source a seconhand engine for this model it seems there are scare as hens teeth. Does anyone know whats the story with them. Hyundai forums mention problems with the older 2.0crdi mainly to do with lack of oil and crankshaft bearings going. The noise is the one I looked at sounds suspiciously like a crankshaft problem too. Had a fair bit of mileage on it but you'd expect them to be able to handle high miles if they were serviced properly.

new here guys so here goes on this one.
i have a 07 santa fe with 160000k on the clock, engine went 2 weeks ago and i have spoken to alot of people ,hyundai personel, mechanics, dismantlers and engine builders and this is what we have pieced together. engine builders will charge 4000 plus vat to rebuild using new block, dismantlers are crying out for them because they are getting good money for them, hence they are like hens teeth, hyundai will not even help out on the cost and the mechanics are stunned at hyundai attitute, why? because the cause for the engine failure is carbon build up in the sump, the pick up pipe becomes clogged up over time, the result being oil starvation throughout the engine......
having spoken to 4 different main dealers ,we got 4 completely different stories back, but the jist is that hyundai have known about this problemfor a while but have not put out any bullitens regarding out to avoid this happening.
for the record i know of 4 santa fe's with this problem and am wondering how many more are out there ???

I've seen these engines do upwards of 350k without major issue.

The Mazda 2.0 diesel engines can suffer blocked oil pick ups due to the build up in the sump to but this is often attributed to long oil change intervals and/or incorrect spec oil used.

Husband experienced same problem last week with his 2006 (new model) Sante Fe 2.2 litre diesel.

Is there a problem starting to occur with these engines? My husband had 180k km on his so not huge mileage by any standard. He was told by a Hyundai dealer that the damage was due to low oil, despite the fact no oil light came on. He is now faced with a bill in excess of €3500 to fix it. The turbo has to be replaced, along with the engine being bored and oversized pistons put into the engine in place of the originals.
