Carbon Clinchers from China.

    Hi,

I will need to purchase a set of Carbon Clinchers for my TT bike when the dust settles after xmas. They will most likely be a set of Hed's or if I can stretch to it a set of Zipps. I was just looking on e-bay and noticed a set of 88mm Carbon Clinchers from China and you could get them delivered for under €500, I was wondering if anyone has purchased or knows anything about these wheels?

    Cheers.

Haven't used them personally but I have read good words about Yishun and Hong-fu wheels.

I had a set of Carbon Tubulars 50mm that I bought off EBay. They were great wheels, didn't give any trouble, were light and strong. I only sold them on as I grew tired of the hassle associated with changing tubs.

On the flip side after I sold the tubs I bought a set of Clincher Zipps - 808 Rear 404 - Front. They were without doubt the worst wheels I have ever ridden - well the rear wheel, the front was fine. When they were up to speed they were great but the rear wheel was constantly in need of repair. I had to change the freehub body after 6 months as the cassette had eaten through it, the rear bearings had to be replaced after 9 months and the dishing in the rear wheel went shortly after - the back tyre was rubbing off my chainstays. After every race the spokes were loose...the list goes on.

My advice; buy the €500 wheels, even if they only last you a year or two they will still be a fraction of the price of the overpriced deep sections from the marquee brands.

...or get a Zipp front and a cheap disc for the rear.

And a Zipp front is still €1K!

Not worth it for 10 seconds on a 10 mile TT! Go on a training holiday in the sun instead! :)

I can't argue with the holiday suggestion, but nearly new 404 tubs come up for 750 a set (including tyres) fairly often.

Yes, warm weather training is highly recommended! Although I wonder why 'nearly new' Zipps come up so often! If they were as good as people make out very few used sets would come up for sale, as they'd be ridden for 000's of miles.

My opinion of them is biased, maybe I'm the exception but I couldn't recommend them to anyone as the no brand carbon wheels I had were much better imo.

Perhaps people grow tired of the hassle associated with changing tubs. ;)

No experience of the far east wheels but I picked up a set of "pre-loved" Zipp 606's clinchers early last year in mint condition, Zipp skewers, 2 new tyres and an Ultegra cassette for a great price and I'm loving them so don't rule out that option.

My HongFu frame is top notch. Im considering ordering a set of 50mm tub rims and building a set up if your interested in combining on shipping. I cannot fault the hongfu stuff thus far, really great quality.
