Replacement Key 2001 Mondeo

I've misplaced my keys and after a lot of searching, retracing my steps etc. I'm facing up to the fact that I'll need to replace it.:( The key in question was the standard remote key below:

    ford-keys.jpg

I have the master key (the 2nd key, with the blue chip) at my parents house and will be getting it brought to me if I cannot find the original key so I will be able to open the car and drive it etc as it has the blue chip to deactivate the immobiliser/alarm.

I'm wondering if it's possible to get a replacement remote key and how much might that cost? Or should I just buy a blank key and programme it myself. I would prefer for this key to be a remote key but if it was easier and cheaper to buy and self programme a 2nd key similar to the master key, I would settle for that.

    Thanks,

Best (cheapest) way in my opinion is:

You can get a new blade supplied and cut for the remote key very cheap from Ford (around €20)

Then try to find a cheap secondhand remote, either online or in a scrapyard or wherever.

Then get a locksmith to recode the remote to suit your car.

eBay is your best bet for the remote fob part. A good few UK sellers have them. You might need to expand your search a little bit if you're using eBay.ie.

George, you wouldn't know the name of a locksmith that would do that recoding for you would you? Any of the places I've found online that say they do it will only do it if you buy the whole key/fob off them as well. They seem to like turning down the easiest part of their business with what I imagine are the highest profit margins also, (10mins of their time reprogramming a key).

I know a local guy in Laois who does them for us. I'm sure there must be plenty of people who can do it for you in Dublin but I don't know of any offhand.

    Many thanks for the replies.
I've contacted a locksmith and a Ford Dealer and both quoted €145.
So, if I can buy a blank remote key off ebay can I get it cut using the master key I still have? The blank key would cost €15-20 and I doubt getting it cut to fit the ignition would be that much, another €10 at most I'd say. That's roughly €110 - €115 left to programme it! For 10 mins work?!
I'd imagine it would be cheaper than the €145 they've quoted to have the key and all cut and ready for them so all they have to do is programme it.

I'll try a few more places asking for 'programme only' quotes I think. Any suggestions of places that might do this would be appreciated.

No probs George, they just all seem to be out for the entire job or nothing at all from what I've found so far. Seems to be more difficult to find a decent one than you would think.

And apologies, just so I dont hijack the thread fully, here are a couple of potential fob links for the Op:

I'm going through this process myself right now. I had a fob and blank key blade which I brought to a locksmiths here in Dublin and they made an absolute mess of the key cutting, it didn't turn out anything like what my original looks like, so I went to Ford and just ordered a factory cut blade for the car. It's costing more but at least I'll know it'll work. When I'm picking that up I plan on asking about the coding as they have said to me before that they would only charge for the labour for as long as it took (15-20mins) which would be about €30-40 I guess.

    op

Have a read of below article might be of assistance to you seems rather easy to do at first glance

@ Bazzy: I've looked into trying to programme a new key myself but for the Mark 3 Mondeo the two keys are required to programme a new key. You need both the remote and the master key to initiate 'key programming mode' on the car so that rules out any DIY solution.

@Dar: How much is it working out for you in total? How much did the dealer charge for the factory cut key? As mentioned above, I was quoted €145 for a new key and for it to be programmed by a Ford Dealer. It hardly works out cheaper by getting the key and programming done separately from the same people? I'm hoping by getting the key bought and cut myself for ~€30 - €40 and then approaching a locksmith/dealer and spending another ~€40 or so getting that key programmed, I'll have saved a few €€€.

But you have the master key with the chip in it?

surely you can get a 2nd hand fob and complete the instructions as per website?

Well I have a MkII Focus, so my fob and key are different to yours, but the factory cut blade and key tip is going to cost me €55. The blank blade tip would have cost €38.

The blank blade and fob got off eBay cost me €35, so I would have been sorted for a lot less than €145 (€170 for me) had the locksmith not made a complete mess of it (that cutting cost me €15, but was refunded). Probably would have worked out at about €80-90 altogether if that plan had worked out, which is a decent saving on the €170 I was quoted all in from Ford.

Ford Red Key System - 1994 to 1998

This system involves a red master key and 2 other user keys already programmed to the car ie ignition keys. The purpose of the red key is to put the car into programming mode to allow further keys to be programmed to your vehicle. Once you insert the Ford red master key, your car will enter programming mode. Then a further 2 keys cut for your vehicle must then be cycled in the ignition, each one being programmed in turn.
If you have lost your Master red key then the only way to program further keys is using professional key programming equipment to program a new master key, only then may further keys be added

Ford 2 Key System (blue key system) - 1998 to current

The transponders in the keys have varied over the years with this system it is identified by having one key with a blue corner hence the blue key system. You must have at least 2 keys programmed for the vehicle ie the blue key and the remote fob key. Once you have both keys programmed you can then add further keys without the need for professional equipment. This is done buy cycling the 2 programmed keys in your ignition in turn, thus putting your car into programming mode, then you can cycle a new key in the ignition and it will be programmed to your car

If I had an older model, my key would be red and the one key would allow me to program a new key. However, the new system requires two keys, one of which is the missing key.
