Construction resumes on campus

    I've noticed a lot of activity on the various construction sites on campus in the last couple of weeks and the Galway Advertiser just shared this on Facebook;
    Construction on a number of building projects at NUI Galway has gotten underway, having been held up by a previous contractor going into administration.

    The five projects are being undertaken on the university's city campus and 400 jobs are expected to be created during the construction phase.

    Contractor JJ Rhatigan & Co has been awarded the contracts and construction is due to be completed on a phased basis from late 2012 into early 2013.

    The construction will include buildings for biomedical science as well as an €8m extension to the Arts Millennium Building, which will house the university's School of Psychology.

    The university said the combined value of the new buildings was €75m.

    I see they're putting up hoarding around half the carpark at the college chapel. This might be for beginning of the extension of the Arts Millenium.

    A reminder of the "Campus of the Future" plans;

    Would it not be an idea for them to finish the swimming pool between Aras de Brun and the Arts Millenium first?

    More info about the construction projects on the NUIG website.

    This should coincide with the completion of the Bishop O'Donnell roadworks and the city they're building on Mars in 2053. Exciting times for Galway.

    Well no reason not to attack all sites at the same time and getting everything finished sooner by taking on extra staff for a shorter period. "400" jobs are to be created. It's not like there's a shortage of construction workers looking for the work!

    Granted, aye, assuming they actually finish some of these projects.

    Well a lot of their current projects seem to be universities, schools and hospitals... rather than private property developers. So they should be a safe enough bet to pay up for the work done. I'm sure NUIG did a good check on the health of the company before awarding the contract!

    One would have thought that the last time too!
    But yes, JJ Rhattigan does look more reliable.

    Haha I remember scorching days on the 2nd floor of the library studying for summer exams and considering jumping in for a dip!

    probably too early to note, but is there an expected finish date and is this new arts building beside the library the one being built?

    "These buildings, which had been temporarily stalled by the receivership of a previous contractor, will be completed on a phased basis from the end of 2012 into early 2013."

    2053? That's a bit optimistic considering the first city on the moon won't be built before ~2069:
