The Irish Wolfhounds...

There has been a lot of talk concerning the Ireland starting XV of late, names like Henry, O'Malley, O'Mahoney, Marshall, Gilroy, Zebo etc etc have been touted as some fresh meat in the irish set up however they are expected to grace a wolfhounds set up as opposed to the full fledge team...my question is, who else is expected to line up in the Wolfhounds and what would be an opinion team...i'd expect a large ulster contingent on the basis that they will probably be overlooked in regards to the starting XV

I posted my team in the other thread. Can't remember but it was something like:

Wilkinson, Varley, Hagan/Archer, McCarthy, Toner, Muldoon, OMahoney, Coughlan, Marshall, Madigan, Gilroy, McFadden OMalley, Kearney, D'Arcy

Or something like that. Henry Cave and Tuohy with the first team btw

Yeah, that looks about right. The likes of Zebo will be in contention too. I'd imagine McFadden is established in the senior squad now. More likely Whitten/McSharry in the Wolfhounds, or maybe Spence if he is fit.

O'Halloran and Gilroy have to start on the wings

i'd expect spence in the team when fit with mcfadden moving into the first team ahead of d'arcy

I'd like to see a team like this, with the bolded guys maybe also in the 30-man senior squad:

    15: D Kearney
    14: Gilroy
    13: Spence (if fit)
    12: McSharry
    11: O'Halloran
    10: Madigan
    9: Marshall
    8: Ruddock
    7: Henry
    6: O'Mahony
    5: Tuohy
    4: McCarthy
    3: Hagan
    2: Varley
    1: Wilkinson

Bench: Sherry, McGrath, Nagle, Diack, Boss, Keatley, Zebo

I'd be surprised if DK names three out-halves in the senior squad so Madigan will miss out but I think he is definitely third-choice now (I'm assuming Humphreys' ship has sailed)

Is D. Kearney a full back?

Who would take the goal kicks? I've seen Madigan kick for Leinster and he wasn't that great. He tended to rush it rather than use a smooth rhythm. If he has improved this aspect of the game then he will be /is a fine player.

I'd be a little worried for Hagan at 3 v. what are usually very good English scrummaging loose heads. I suppose there is no one else (except the Great Marshmallow). Andress? Fitzpatrick is injured of course. Cronin, Macklin aren't good enough at the moment. I'd have a bit of belief in Macklin becoming a decent player shortly.

Madigan can kick, he's just behind three very fine kickers at Leinster. I wouldn't have a problem with him kicking tbh, be a good opportunity to showcase his kicking talents. I think its worth 'risking' him as our first choice kicker for the Wolfhounds as he is the most promising of the Irish OHs atm imo.

    D. Kearney can play FB, but has spent most of his time at Leinster playing on the wing. Not many options at FB. Hurley has been solid for Munster at FB and might be a better option to bring some stability to what is a makeshift side.

    My team would be:

    15. Hurley/Conway/D'Arcy
    14. Gilroy
    13. EOM/Griffin
    12. McSharry
    11. TOH
    10. Madigan
    9. Marshall
    8. Muldoon
    7. POM/Henry
    6. Ruddock
    5. Toner
    4. McCarthy
    3. Hagan
    2. Varley
    1. Wilkinson

Bench: Sherry, Archer, Nagle, Coughlan, Boss, Keatley, Zebo/Spence/D. Kearney

By trade. Shoved onto the wing as is the case with most full backs when they first come through. Can't see him ever being a full back at senior level consistently though. Doesn't have the goalkeeper instincts of his brother. Picks great lines from deep though so can be useful hitting the line:

O'Halloran and Gilroy have to start on the wings

Not that convinced by O'Halloran yet but Gilroy for sure. O'Halloran's mistakes still worry me.

i think gilroys defence looks somewhat lacking, however, in saying that i thought against leicester he stepped up and actually gave a relatively convincing defensive performance would just like to see a few more of those before he gets my 100% backing

Gilroy is similar, just doesn't get as many opportunities to have them shown up as Ulster do better without the ball.

They've both already shown that they can learn from their mistakes. I wouldn't chose anyone but the two in the Wolfhounds.

If Fitz needs gametime before 6Ns (due to injury) I'd give him a run on the wing but if he gets 80 minutes this weekend I'd say he is fine and play TOH and Gilroy on the wings.

Defensively he's prone to mistakes. Going forward, he's top notch. Made 115 meters and beat 3 defenders at the home of Toulouse. Also dominated Clerc. Think he should be in the Wolfhounds squad

Disagree to be honest, O'Halloran has a long way to go before he's at this level. But I won't go into it or the Connacht fans will descend on me.

    Vs Toulouse

TOH deserves place- he only has had 1 poor game all season (vs Aironi- and he wasn't alone in that)

Hagan's scrummaging is a million times better than what it was 3 years ago, and the Connacht scrum was rock solid for most of last year when he played TH, its one aspect of his game I wouldn't have any worries about. No better way to improve than playing against those kind of players too. I've said it before, I think Hagan is the future Irish no. 3 when Ross retires, and we should be giving him experience at this level now to get him ready for that.

Or we might just disagree with you! :p

    That's allowed I presume...?

Its a pity Griffin is injured at the moment as I'd like to see him involved. If Cave doesn't make the main squad he should definitely get a run here too.

20 years of age, he has to make mistakes at this level to learn

His form has been fantastic this year by and large.

My only concern with him is when the ball is kicked in behind, he can be slow on the turn and over the 1st 5 yards. That can be worked out though.

Big big talent along with Griffin, absoloutely thrilled we have them in Connacht for 2 more seasons and hopefully beyond. These are the kind of positives that keep me going in a tough season
