I have a 2005 BMW 116i and need new brake pads on all 4 wheels. I got a quote of a mechanic for supply & fit but want to see if I can source them myself. I found two different types on micksgarage.ie (TRW & ATE). How can I check which type fits my car? Can I clearly see without having to get under the car?

Textar, ATE and TRW are all good brands. All are OE suppliers, as are the likes of Ferodo, Pagid, Jurid, Bosch and Brembo. If you buy pads made by any of those you won't go too far wrong. As Swhyte says you should be able to get them just as cheap if not cheaper in a motor factor than on micksgarage, so support your local businesses!

Thanks for the replies. I'm totally clueless regarding car parts. I'll definitely check out a local motor factors and I'm sure they can advise on the most suitable.
    Thanks again :)

Have you got the warning on the dash telling you the pads need to be changed? If so, you'll also need new pad wear sensors to go with the new pads. Even if the warning isn't on, its best to replace them anyway as they will often come apart when you try to remove them.

The warning came up once a couple of weeks ago and then disappeared. Thanks for the advice I'll make sure to get sensors too

If it can on and went back off, have you checked your brake fluid level.

Once the sensors are triggered then the light will stay on.

The car was serviced at the weekend and the mechanic said the brake pads will need replacing within a couple of weeks.

    What year is the car?
Could be a problem with the servo.

You should probably start another thread but the first place your mechanic should have looked was the vacuum pipe to the servo.

Most of the rubber and plastic pipes and their connections are prone to cracking or breaking on BM's.
