Car for my Mam!!

Ok I've been meaning to buy my mam a new car because she's been driving round in an old bangor for years and its on its last legs at this stage. Yesterday it finally gave up the ghost so I figure its a sign! ;)

So with that in mind here's what I have in front of me:

    Budget: 2.5k
Carsize: Midrange (last car was a liftback 97 civic so something similar size)
Engine Size: 1.2 to 1.6 maybe
Engine type: Petrol (doesn't do enough mileage to warrant a diesel)

Any suggestions would be most welcome. I have a few ideas myself. I'm trying to balance getting her up in the years a bit but also a decent, reliable, safe car for her aswell.

    Thanks

I had one of these as a hire car on holidays a few years ago and despite my initial trepidation, it wasn't a bad little motor.

Not exciting in any way, but seemed fairly solid.

    Thanks mate!

I suppose I'd just be wary of long term reliability on fiats. She'd be looking to keep it for another few years I'd say. I know for a fact she doesn't want a Punto, so I dunno if a Stilo would fit the bill but certainly yes, seems like value alright.

05 Laguna II facelift Privilege (top spec) 1.6, asking 2950 from a dealer with new NCT

Not that easy to find a top rated car for safety in your price range. The Toyota Avensis 03 on would be one but I'd say you'd struggle to get even a 03 high mileage one for budget.

An outsider choice perhaps but what about an Audi A2 - light nippy good visability and they sip petrol - there's a 60k miles 00 for sale for €2950
Or an 01-03 Civic or a Jazz

Looks like that seller is a private dealer, nothing wrong with that but just bear in mind

I would say mazda 6... they are 1.8 so more tax but they seem to be good value.. A bit bigger than what you suggested.

Yeah mate some great value in the bigger cars. I defo would be looking at a 6 or even a Mondeo, or primera if she wanted one but I have a passat and she doesn't like driving that at all!! Too big she says. I think she just wants something mid sized that she can nip in out to town/work, carry a few passengers, the shopping comfortably etc.

    :pac:

OP, make sure you get something with a big boot (awaits octavia puns :P). I wrote my mams car off when I was 18 and replaced it with my Seicento. It comes home every time stuffed with shopping

    I'd second a 1.2 Fiat every time :)

Some suggestions there I'd be surprised at, I wouldn't think of a Laguna, particularly for my mam...

I's say stick with Toyota, Nissan, Honda
Ultra reliable, easy to run and service....

    Corolla, Almera, Civic

A 01-02 Civic. The Saloon is good but like the hatch also. A very reliable car and easy on the juice which helps.

Mk1 ford focus saloon 1.6 ghia. Lovely car to drive and pretty reliable. You'd pick one up for under-budget too.
