"Observing" a class in a primary school

    Hi

I've seen mention of people "observing" in a classroom before they qualify.

I'm very interested in switching from law to primary teaching and think it would be essential to first see what teaching is really like. Obviously I couldn't seek subbing positions or anything like that - but observing a class for a couple of days seems like a great opportunity to get a feel for what the job is really like.

Does anyone know how you would go about arranging this? Do you have to have Garda vetting done first? (Although with my job all the local Gardai know me and thankfully I've always been on the "right" side of the courtroom!!!)

Do you just enquire with some local primary schools?

    Thanks! :)

You do not need garda clearance if you will not be alone with the children. Contact your local primary and ask can you volunteer for a bit. If you are hoping to go into primary teaching, a few days in a Gaelscoil would do no harm either.
