Which ones don't engage in this nonsense? And name and shame the worst once. I'll get the ball rolling with Concern. I will NEVER give it money, EVER.

If you don't want to give money to someone who asks for it, then just say 'no'. It really is that simple.

The ones that want to waste money by not using the most cost effective way of fundraising, they are the ones who don't chug. Give to them, instead of the ones who spend money wisely.

Chugging works, whether you like it or not. I managed a fundraising agency in London, started as a chugger myself but can't imagine how I ever did it. Too many arseholes you have to deal with out there.

I still donate to charities who use street fundraising, but never to any who TV advertise, biggest waste of money ever and only done to say "look how big we are".

Would agree with the above, an assertive but polite "No Thank you" normally works for me.

I find if you hesitate you are doomed.

Deprive the recipients because of chuggers? Nice. Why not just support the charity but not via chuggers?
The organisation shouldn't be punished because of pettiness. I detest chugging btw.

Strolling down Shop St in Galway, birds are singing, children are playing, all is well :)

You look up and further down the street you spy a realy good looking girl looking right at you, giving you the eye

And then she smiles and approaches you.

    Well how are you?
She looks at your shopping bag and comments on your purchases and asks about your weekend or plans for that night

Who is this girl as you rack your brain to think have you met her before. You make conversation back

And they she pulls out a Hanley centre scratchcard and asks you to support the cause

    Heart sinks :(

Curse you Hanley Centre and your tactics.

They do the same on Cruises St Limerick. People ignore chuggers, people do not ignore friendly wimmins

I don't understand people's problems with these things. Just say 'no thanks'?

    I couldn't give a chug tbh.

The words "Can't stop, in a rush" work for me as they look in my direction and I also have my MP3 player on so I can't actually hear what they are saying anyway!

Yeah, how dare they interrupt your day to solicit money for starving kids. Quick! To the internet to voice your displeasure!

What a wonderful person you must be.

If you don't want to give money to someone who asks for it, then just say 'no'. It really is that simple.

And then say "no" again to the guy who's standing 5 meters down the street. And then again to the one waiting around the corner. And again to the one lurking behind the newsagent....

I wouldn't mind them so much if they didn't hunt in packs.

With the amount of free stuff charities can get, I think if someone is sponsoring their video and TV gives them free spots, nothing wrong with ads. or Chugging.

I tend to donate to charities that follow a cause I genuinely care about- whichever way is convenient to me- sometimes through direct debit, sometimes by cheque and sometimes to chuggers- I would rather they weren't in your face but you know what- it can't be an easy job so fair play them for volunteering.

    Yeah, they aren't volunteering. It's a job.

They get paid a flat salary, but do not get paid commission. If they don't get a certain amount of signups then they get canned.

Makes no difference to my life, I just don't make any eye contact. If that doesn't work then a simple 'No, not interested' works fine. Think of it as a little assertiveness training exercise.

Well, in fairness I felt that one alarmist, over-the-top, self-righteous post deserved another in return.

Or say you don't have a bank account... or that you're already signed up.
Conversation over. Or you could also do what I did and tell them that you and your friend are their way to an important appointment. Probably should of thought that through...
