    Hi
I bought a bike last year that came with all campy veloce groupset.
I was looking at some used record 10sp groups which would bling up my shiny frame .

I am doing very little to no cycling at present but will be soon out 2-3 days a week for a charity cycle in april.

My question is : Is it worth the cost to upgrade to a 1-2 year old groupset and would I still get the same use/milage out of it ?

    Cheers - Paul

    Yes and No.
    Yes.
Well Record is record and is nicer then Veloce and the shifting will be slightly better. Your bike will look a lot better for having Record on it and will be a few grams lighter. The carbon on the RD supposedly gives it a slightly better shift but who the hell cares when it looks that nice.
If you switch gruppo's I would recommend putting in new cables and housings.
    No.
Veloce is a more then adequate gruppo and works/performs just as well as reord.

The record shifters have ball bearings in them which give them a better feel/movement and will last longer then Veloce (which have disks). Not saying that Veloce will wear out. It wont.
The only difference between the skeleton brakes in the same year models of record- veloce is a couple of Ti screws.
The difference's between crankset's on the Veloce and record is that Veloce is metal and record is Carbon making it lighter, stiffer and lovelier(presuming UT). The BB cups and bearings are the same afaik.
Rear and Front mechs will have the differences between them of Carbon and Ti this making them lighter, stiffer and lovlier.

I'm guessing that your Veloce was more than likely the power torque groupset? If so, moving to older record you will get the benefit of multiple upshifts. Does this matter? Outside of a racing situation, no.

I have Athena 11 speed and Veloce 10 speed, one is Ultra torque, the other power torque. The Athena has the benefit of multiple upshifts, but I use the Veloce bike for training/sportives and all I care about is the hood shape, which is the same. Heck, I can't even warrant needing multiple upshifts in a race, but sometimes it's nice to have. Would I need it on a sportive? No, I can spend the few extra seconds clicking once per gear. To me they both perform similarly, the Veloce has a small penalty on the "clickety crisp shifting" scale.

To be honest, I could think of better upgrades, like a set of wheels or a new bike computer (I've found myself thinking about a Garmin 800, I need maps as I don't know my way around here!)

I suppose getting lost in Australia is slightly less embarrassing than getting lost on the other side of the Liffey.

To answer the OP, I'd echo what Dirk said. Multiple upshifts and a small amount of weight are likely to be the main difference. I'd say shifting performance will be quite similar.

Record is decidedly more pro and Euro, though...

+1 on the above comments. I moved from Centaur to R11 and SR11 and apart from the crispier sound on the changes, the upshifts, the weight, the looks and the extra gear (are these not enough reasons yet? :) )there isn't any huge difference on the performance; centaur just felt a bit more cluncky than record.

It's tough, but I'm hoping to find my way out to Palm Beach on Friday for a bit of a spin:

Dirk, bear in mind that GPS isn't available in Australia because the satellites won't work upside down.

Thanks every one for the advice ,

Think I will stick with the veloce for the time being , I had just ordered a set of campy zonda's to replace the fulcrum 7's that came with the bike ,and I think this just started me off on an upgrade binge.

Cant justify record due to my lack of experience/ability ,and I havent broken the veloce in yet so may not be as clunky in the future.

Also think the silver of the veloce goes better with the Ti frame anyway.

It may be time to replace the SPD's with some proper pedals though !!
