City Break in Germany??

I was thinking of going to Berlin for the weekend with a few friends in the coming months, however the fares are a bit ludicrous. I then looked up fares to Frankfurt which are quite reasonable. I would be grateful if anybody could fill me in as to whether Frankfurt is worth visiting compared to Berlin.
We are mainly going for the nightlife but I'm just wondering is it a decent place to visit when it comes to shopping, sightseeing etc.?

Nah, seriously, Keith is right, Berlin is quite boring and overrated, Düsseldorf (or Hamburg) is way better

Berlin is a great city, one of the best weekends away in Europe, keith was referring to Frankfurt which is hell with nothing open.

Nah, I've been living in Berlin for the last 12 years, Keith is right.

To be fair, it's not the worst city in the world, there are quite a few places of historical interest, beyond that, it's a kip...

There can be a huge gulf between the appeal of a city as a destination for a short break and its appeal as a place to live. I thought Berlin was a great place for a short visit. I do like places of historical interest, and I like museums.

LOL .. I was talking about Frankfurt :)

Snoozeville .. the only reason you'd go there is to work or to see an event in the Messe.

Its also expensive (In comparison to Duesseldorf), spread out all over the place and there isn't really any center of activity, you'll just end up getting taxis if you want to go on any sort of a Pub Crawl.

Duesseldorf (I've lived/worked here since 2008) is quite business orientated, the Altstadt is quite good to go out in if your into that sort of thing.

My money would be on Cologne, one of the reasons being the Beer. *I HATE Alt Bier*

Although the ICE runs from Frankfurt so your not far from stuff.

If your flights cheap its probably Ryanair which flys to Hahn, thats about 2 to 2 and 1/2 hours on Public Transport to Frankfurt

You could also fly to Duesseldorf (Weeze) which is about the same (To Duesseldorf)

Berlin is a good craic .. for me anyway ;) I know quite a few squat bars around Freidrichshein :)

Depends on what your used to I guess.... I'd find Amsterdam quite boring and overrated, but it is only 1hr 45min train journey away.

For great drinking squares, cathedral and river cruise, Cologne. Dusseldorf good craic too. Only 40 minutes by train... fly to Dusseldorf 100 quid return usually so to see both same weekend is no bother

Go to Berlin for the weekend. Loads to see and do.

Munich is "nice" but crap night life , and Bavaria is one of the most beautiful regions in Europe.

Berlin is great. Munich good too. Hamburg a bit less so, but better than Frankfurt.

If you can, go to Dusseldorf/Cologne for the Karneval. Ash Wenesday this year is 22 February, so the weekend of 18-19th would be the job. Stay for Rose Monday (20th) in Dusseldorf.

I wouldn't knock Frankfurt if you are only going for the nightlife. While the city has feck all going for it, it has a great nightlife with fantastic clubs. Cocoon (Sven Vath is resident DJ), Living (under the central bank), King Kamehameha and U60311 (old underground station converted to club at Hauptwache) are all fantastic. Great bars around Sachsenhausen, Haptwache has a few decent places and Hanauer Landstrasse has a couple ok bars if heading to the clubs there.

Yeah, I think I've been here too long ;)

But I stand by my opion that Düsseldorf is better, but then again, that probably depends on what you want to do, apparantly the clubs in Berlin are great, but I don't do much clubbing, so I can't really compare, but as far as bars are concerned, I'd choose Düsseldorf any day
