Gas fire fitted, should chimney have a cap on it?

Our builders have finished and we're doing the snag list. I'm a bit concerned about our gas fire. We have a Gazco Studio 1 glass inset fire. The builders fitted a stainless steel flue and you can see the top of it sticking out of the chimney. My question is - should there be a cover/shield on it to stop birds/pieces of crap falling down it? I'm just worried that if that happened there could be a fire what with the intense heat produced by the fire

Yes there should be some from of guard (crow guard)

The issue is not fire, the issue is you light the fire with a blocked chimney and never wake up again due to CO poisoning

Thanks. Is there any particular type of guard that we should use specifically for the gas fire or would any chimney guard do?

The gaurd won't stop crows from blocking the chimney, they may be clever but they don't realise until it's too late that they can't nest in the chimney.

So what's the solution then?
