Had the timing belt done on my car 10000 miles ago. It broke sunday. Im just sending it back to the garage where it was done.

There saying the part are warrantied and if it that they will replace they say i might need to pay 20% of the cost for "oil" etc should i have to pay it?

the engine isnt ruined apparently its not a total rebuild when the timing belt goes it snaps something else preventing it from doing damage.

diesel 1.9jtd alfa GT - not turning out to be a great january..

    Any advice?

    Mike

they said 20% of 2k but the havent even looked at it yet. ill know more at the end of today.

I've heard about that 20% before, apparently parts manufacturer requires that money from garage (or motor factors) in case they ordered wrong part and have to change it for another.

But in your case the part broke down, so I don't think you have to pay that.

Now ofcourse new oil etc little bits and pieces cost something but it's still t-belt manufacturer responsibility since their faulty part is root cause of disaster.

Maybe the belt wasn't faulty.maybe the mechanic installed it wrong or over tensioned it r under tensioned it.you never no.but I would imagine u have bent valves and a damaged piston and a bent Conrod at a minimum.but weather the belt was faulty r fitted wrong you will never no.the person who is gona foot the bill be the garage that fitted the belt and I doubt they will have any intrested or luck in chasing the belt manufacture to recoupe the cost or damage,

The 16v JTD engine has rocker type cam followers that break when the belt goes, like the old 1.6 Opel diesels years ago if you ever worked on them. That generally saves the engine from any valve or piston damage.

OP was the water pump changed at the same time as the timing belt?

Hate being a Nazi about this but put a space after a full stop please. It's hard to read the way it is.

I think as long as you didnt take any shortcuts and tell them not to change the water pump or anything else they advised you should not have to pay anything, I work in a car parts distributor and we would have to pay the bill, sometimes even get charged for hired cars while its being repaired, i would not pay anything no way, this is not your fault

someone said that to me allright about rocker cam. no i never took any shortcuts. full service history . last service was November with TI autos (alfa specialist) he said everything was working fine.

N.B - TI isnt the one who did the timing belt!

To George Dalton's question - did they change the water pump? This is advised when changing the timing belt on the JTD - water pump failure seems to be a common enough cause of timing belt failure on this engine - there's a long enough thread about it on Alfaowner.

OP - why did you go somewhere else for the TB change if you had the car serviced by Ti in Novemeber? Why did you not have the TB changed in November? I'm not trying to be smart, just curious.

€2,000 sounds at the higher end of the range for the JTD - you'd nearly get a V6 engine rebuilt for that.

Is there any sign of any oil leaks from the engine?

The main reasons a timing belt will fail prematurely are the new belt being over or under Tensioned or oil contamination which weakens the belt so if the belt has failed after just 10k the it has to be either of the above or a faulty part(tensioner/guide etc).

no sign of leaks i checked it. there was a burning smell. still waiting to hear back from the garage.

Sounds like a guide/tensioner bearing may have seized.

You'd need to check if they changed the full kit or just the belt on its own.
