Getting Started

    Hi Everyone

Im very interested in starting a bit of hunting. I was wondering if I could get some advice on the following:

I have done some research and understand you to need to licence each gun but is there another licence which needs to be gotten prior to this to allow you to purchase a gun. Purchasing a gun would seem difficult if you have to give the in dept details of the weapon. ie serial no ect. (Im assuming it may take quite a period of time to get all sorted with the Gards)

I am interested in starting with game birds mainly and hopefully progressing over time so I will be looking for a shot gun prob O/U or side by side to start. With regard to the land that is required is it simply a case of having to know people with land or are there commercial hunting land where a membership can be purchased?

Finally am I correct in believing that you require permission from multiple lad owners?

These are the main points I feel I could do with some advice on, however, all and any constructive advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

    Am I correct

The process for me went like this:

    1. Went to a local RFD, he showed me what he had for sale, what would be best to start out with etc and put a deposit on a rifle and the RFD helped me fill out the forms there and then.

    2. Got all the bits and pieces needed for the application, photos, land owners permission, and the serial number of the firearm I had my deposit on. I then submitted the application forms to my local Gardai Station and waited.

    3. After more waiting I was told my application was approved. From there I had to purchase a gun cabinet, and fit it. A Guard went to my RFD and checked out the the rifle to make sure serial numbers matched, and it was what I said it was on the forms. He then came to the house to check that my gun cabinet was installed and within standards.

    4. I then received a letter stating my application had been granted and I should get another letter with method of payment for my license. I got the method of payment 2 days later, went to the post office and paid the €80. Had my license in the post 2 days later and I picked up my rifle the same day after paying off the balance.

With regards the land owner issue I had to submit letters from 2 local land owners with their signatures. Also had to get the land owners details. The local firearm officer (FO) also wanted to know who else shoots on the land. I also shoot on a third permission but I didn't have it on the application at the time, and the FO is happy enough to let me shoot wherever I get permission.

You also may need to complete a safety course at your own cost.

With regards to clubs I can't help you with that as I have no experience with any but others here will point you in the right direction :)

Hope that helps, can't think of anything else, but I probably did forget something!

Thanks for the reply. Im living in Dublin. So I can purchase a gun but need to leave it with a registered firearms dealer/ current owner until a licence is obtained for the weapon is it? I am familiar with firearms as I am a member of the defence forces and have been hunting with a friend on the very odd occasion. Yea a gun safe would be the first purchase on the list. I may know some people with land that will allow me to use their land but what are the conditions which make the land suitable would you know.

When I put the deposit on the Firearm it was left with the RFD. Legally he can't sell it to you and hand it over if you haven't got a license, and when I went to pick mine up I had to have photo ID along with the license.

I wouldn't buy anything until you get the license granted either, I knew where to get a safe and I had it delivered within a day so no need to buy early really.

As regards the land and conditions, I would think as long as the land is not too close to a public road or any substantial dwellings etc. Again I had no problem as my permission is miles and miles of fields!

Saying that, you have to put the land owners details on the form, address, employment and phone number as a check is carried out on them and with them.

You can even ask your FO and they will be more than happy to advise you. I had a local Sgt look over my application before it was submitted, and it went through grand.

Im living in North Dublin I would hope to use land in and around Droughada and maybe Rush/Lusk area and possibly on occasion land in Roscommon. No country address though for me tho. All dependent on land permission tho.

Firstly you search around for a shotgun that you like and that fits you well, you put a deposit on it and get the make, model and serial number off the gun, you also get the RFD's pulse number to put on the form. Download the form and fill it out.

I am interested in starting with game birds mainly and hopefully progressing over time so I will be looking for a shot gun prob O/U or side by side to start. Over and under is the most common gun for game shooting since they are lighter than pumps/semi's.
You'll need permission off farmers to shoot on their land. Write up a template saying you have permission to shoot game and vermin on xxxx's land and their acreage and signature.
Tree is the norm but less will do if they have alot of land

option two is join the local gunclub and pay the membership. They will have pre asked farmers for permission and will show you where you can shoot.

Finally am I correct in believing that you require permission from multiple lad owners?
as said above, three is the norm.

These are the main points I feel I could do with some advice on, however, all and any constructive advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

    answered bits in navy

You'll most likely have to do a firearms handling and competence course. This will be of benefit to you if you never used a gun before.

When i bought the gun i also bought the safe at the same time and installed it before i sent in the FCA1.

If you do this and add the receipt and photo of it installed it could speed things up. showing you have taught about the safety aspect before having to be told to, shows your thinking in the right direction

Can people please refrain from using txt speak. Other users find this difficult to read and understand.
