beach between coney island in Sligo and the mainland is driven on every day to get across.

A woman in her 50s has been killed in an accident in Co Kerry.

The woman, who is believed to be an American tourist, was struck by a truck on Inch beach shortly before 10am today.

She was pronounced dead at the scene.

To be fair, she got off the bus, walked behind a truck collecting surf boards that was reversing and got hit.

Is the salt water/sand a problem for modern cars ? Is there anything to rust these days ?

Only suspension components, driveline, fasteners and electronic sensors:D
Salt water has an almost unequalled destructive power on mechanical objects and electronics.
Sands properties haven't changed much either with regard to wearing parts prematurely.

    agreed.

If the OP is asking what beach should he rally around to the nuisance and danger of the general public I would suggest stay at your local beach.... leave ours alone!

    (I know I'm a kill-joy.... but I'm also a dog walking beach user)

I think it's a great way to learn how to drive. I learned on the back beach of Rossbeigh, near Glenbeigh Co.Kerry. Only during quiet periods of course.

Which I think is a much safer idea rather than asking someone 40 idiotic questions on the rules of the road and then saying go knock yourself out on the road now.

A full power wash afterwards is a must however to get rid of that sand..

IMO Driving lessons with an Instructor are a good way to learn how to drive, Driving around on a Beach is the same as driving around a Car Park, except you can't get bogged down in a Car Park.

If you want to act the tool then do a drift course, where there aren't people around walking dogs etc
    Link

A Good powerwash every so often in the Winter is needed also when the roads are salted.

Like I said, quiet periods.. when no one else is there, i.e an empty beach. Which happens quite often with the weather we have here.

Of course lessons with a driving instructor is essential.. the 12 minimum should have been long enforced. However, you're still on public roads and without the basic driving skills (i.e being able to move off and stop safely..) you shouldn't be on the road to begin with.

Just on the drifting, it can be a perfectly safe practice also if you make it that. There are people out there with a bigger brain than a heavy foot but they also might still like to do it.

Get the lesson firsts then and learn how to.

The only way you can guarantee nobody else is around is if its your land, fenced off with no access.

How many times have you heard 'came out of nowhere'.

    Or if you get stuck:

Omey Island near Clifden is long, flat and pretty solid under the wheels. Be careful though, it's very flat and when the tide comes in the water will be halfway up your wheels in about 10 minutes.

Was there for the beach tag rugby festival years ago and we were in the middle of a match when the organisers came running waving their hands to tell everyone to get their cars off the beach ASAP. By the time we got off the beach, up the ramp onto the road there was water halfway up the wheels, and we were one of the first off.

Check tidal times etc before bringing your car out there.
