Pre 1980 import: Once off NCT, or NCT every year?

    Hi Everyone,
I'm researching bringing in a classic car, this is due to a better supply of the car in the UK.
If I do this -I am aware that there are a number costs associated with importing etc.

But my question is will it be regarded as any Irish pre 1980 car which is NCT exempt, or is there a different rule for imported pre 1980 cars (perhaps where an NCT will then be required yearly)?

I think I saw on a previous post where there is an initial one off NCT for general road worthiness..

And just to let you know before posting this I did try to search for the answer..
thanks in advance for any advice about this...

according to the current legislation all post jan 1st 1980 cars need nct every year hence the premium on 1979 cars.

Exactly. A case was reported by Corky some time back of what appeared to be incorrect procedures being followed by an individual penpusher. The penpusher has a right to refuse to register something that isn't a mechanically-propelled vehicle (e.g. a body brought in on a trailer with no wheels, or a car without an engine - both those are probably best described as "quality used spares"), but if it looks like a car, it probably is.

Currently for a pre-1st January 1980 car, no NCT is required upon first registration or subsequently thereafter. They should not even ask for a previously valid and/or any other pass certificate of a Periodic Technical Inspection (be it MOT, APK, TUV, etc.).

the NCT will not complete the VRT procedure on a car unless it is roadworthy. It's not an NCT test, but if it does not have a foreign "MoT" and there is obvious serious rust or major bits missing or if it does not run, they will not re register it until such time as that is all rectified.

When I registered my (1978) Volvo in October, no MoT cert was requested. They did not look for any obvious serious rust, nor as me to start the car to show that it ran. The only things they are interested in is that the VIN number is present and correct and the other minor details such as number of seats, model, colour, etc are correct.

They weren't interested in checking the engine number and registered it under the engine number on the UK V5C (which was incorrect) and not the number I supplied on the form (which was correct). They washed their hands of the thing after they had the monies. Apparently I have to drag it round to a Main Stealer or a Motor Trader with DoE Garage Code, to get them to read the number off the block and stamp a form so the Motor Tax office can amend the details.

Anyway, the pen pusher isn't qualified to determine if the vehicle is "roadworthy" (to use Corky's expression). Their job is to see if the vehicle is what the paperwork says it is, that it has wheels on it and maybe some seats inside (to use my expression, whether or not is a mechanically propelled vehicle) and empty your wallet on behalf of the taxman.

what the NCTS actually do and what the regs SAY they should do, might not be the same. Just because one NCTS centre did it your way, dosent mean they all will or that next time even that centre might not do it right.

Exactly...You could bring the same car to two different NCT centres & get asked for different documents & have different checks done. They are human after all, a point alot seem to forget. The more people highlight the pre 1980 exemption the highter chances that this will be removed.

OP: You should not have to NCT your vehicle.
