Dublin Airport Autonomous Region?

I just had a thought the other day about how the EU are seriously starting to damage the aviation sector in Ireland (something we are damn good at) and the EU with more and more taxes and ever increasing amounts of them should be stopped in their tracks. The EU carbon emissions scheme from Jan 1st is having a serious effect of ticket prices on long haul travel especially from the UK where their own government rips off everyone with their APD.

So I was thinking this could be an opportunity for Ireland to capitalise on something. I may be totally mad but I'll throw it out there anyway.

We should declare the Independent Autonomous regions of Shannon, Dublin and Cork Airports. Basically allow the few square miles of land in all three airports to become autonomous similar to the channel islands and be outside of the EU and their unwanted bureacracy. The airport terminals could remain in the ROI and EU and eg. a plane flying in from the US would be travelling from eg. Chicago to the Dublin Airport Autonmous Region and land and then taxi into the Republic of Ireland and the EU.

Similary it would then taxi from the ROI to the DAAR (Dublin Airport Autonomous Region) and depart from outside the EU.

It could also be rejigged to allow people to buy Duty-Free even when flying to say London.

Any Ideas or am I just suffering the effects of too much of facebooks Airline Manager?

So, how will this affect customs and excise?

And if we wanted to start a nuclear weapons program could we designate the Curragh as an autonomous region?!

    Yep.

All existing aviation agreements are between RoI and other nation states. So No-One could fly in/out or DAAR until agreements were in place.

Not to mention the political, administrative, bureaucratic hurdles this concept would face.
