Peugeot Engines: ST 1.6 Hdi versus SX 1.6 Hdi | Peugeot 5008

I'm on the market for a MPV and am considering the Peugeot 5008 with the SX 1.6 Hdi engine.

A colleague has a bad taste in his mouth after forking out a fortune to fix a turbo problem on his Peugeot 407 with a ST 1.6 Hdi engine. The mechanic says he has seen similar problems and they are only coming to light now (4/5 years from new).

Are these the one and the same engine? Can I expect similar problems to emerge with the SX engine in 5 years time?

ST and SX are trim levels, it's the same engine afaik.

Unlikely you should have too many problems with the car if you maintain it properly, which you should if bought from new, otherwise check the service history. The right oil is very important iirc. Others on this forum know more than I do though..

Nearly sure SX and ST are trim levels. Engine would be the same and generally well regarded as being as reliable as any modern diesel i.e. not very

Your friend must not have serviced it on time and/or used the incorrect grade of oil, as these are the only reasons the turbo goes in those engines, they are a very reliable engine if you look after them. It may be an alien concept to a lot of Irish motorists, but there is a reason why cars need to be serviced!

And yes, SX or ST is only a trim level, nothing to do with the engine. Also the 3008 uses a revised version of the engine in the 407 as well.

Thanks all for that. What had me thinking they were different was the different bhp mentioned. Not sure how accurate this wiki article is but it refers to it as the DLD-416. It could effectively end up in any PSA/Ford car by the sounds of it.

Yes, that engine is used in everything from a Mini to a Volvo S80. The engine was updated a few years ago to give it a little bit more power, they were 110 bhp but they're now gone up to as much as 115. Maybe the newer engines have a revised turbo so maybe they will be more tolerant of neglect as well!

They're one of the best diesel engines for reliability as long as they're serviced on time. If you're going to be driving around town most of the time then you should look at a petrol engine though. Things like the DPF (particle filter) and EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) valve clog up when the car is driven around town most of the time. This is true for every modern diesel, not just the Peugeot diesel. If you'll be doing a fair bit of driving out on main roads, don't worry about those kind of things going wrong!
