What is the average price for a clutch/gearbox repair on a 206?

    Greetings

Basically I'm buying my first car and I've seen a beaut of a 206 I wish to purchase. However there's a slight problem, which is the clutch or gearbox is going. It's a second hand car and the owner has said the following about the clutch:-

"the clutch is broken. the car still drives perfect but the gears are a bit dodgy"
"its not that bad of a problem it's just the clutch really, still drives perfect."

Also the owner has said I can drive it to prove it works fine.

Any idea how much it would cost to fix this? And before you say go for a different car, this one is the one I'll be making love to. So please advise a rough cost for either or both the problems. (apparently it could just be one of them)

    What do you guys think?

    Cheers in advanced!

    Rob.

Impossible to say, a clutch replacment and a gearbox repair are two very different things.

Well could you give a rough estimate for either?

I would recommend you bring a mechanic with you to give an expert opinio non what is wrong with it and what it's likely to cost.

But seriously - there are over 400 206's on carzone.ie - I'm sure it would be fairly easy to find another one to make love to that doesn't need a clutch/gearbox.

Okay I will do that, but they live quite a distance away from me so I don't want to waste too much time or money on this. I'd rather just someone gave me a heads up with a rough estimate.

In regards to the love making:pac:, I am aware there are a vast amount of cars out there but unfortunately I do not have the money for most of them, nor do I like them as much as I do with this one.

It might be cheaper in the long run to spend more up front. What kind of money are you looking at spending, including repair work?

Sounds like not too much mechanical trouble so parts could be €100-300 but it's high labor cost, probably 5-8 hours of work

@ Simpsons - I have approx 200-300 to spend on it.

@ The world - I've just been told that the car still drives perfectly and the owner regularly drives to work and back in it. Surely it won't require replacing the entire clutch or gearbox then would it?

@Freestaylaz - You read me like a book. Or watched me like a movie....whatever you prefer ;o

I'm not sure you'd even get a clutch for that kind of money. Is the car free?

The car itself is 1 grand, I have an extra 200-300 to spend on repairs. Bare in mind it's still running fine just the gears are a bit dodgy.

I would be worried that it's had a hard life. 206's don't last forever. I can see quite a few 99 - 01 206's with a years NCT (which is a full NCT for a 10 year old car) up there for 1000 - 1500 in Dublin. I'm sure most of them won't need clutches. Why take the risk?

That there is exactly why. Almost impossible to find a white Peugeot yet alone a 4 door one. And then there's sweeeeet alloys on it.

Can anybody give me any idea of a price? No offence lads I appreciate the feedback, but I'm here to find out a price, not to find out where I can buy another car.
