Myself and my brother are going buying a .17hmr between us.
We think we are going to go for a cz 455 Varmint thumb hole stock with a 16" barrel.

Before we go to the dealers could anyone recommend a few scopes..our budget is roughly 200euro.

Also a moderator..is there any make in particular recommended or are they all much the same?

    Thanks for any replys.

At that budget the Bushnell Banner Dawn & Dusk 6-18x50 might be a good choice.

The Sak Moderator is a good choice also. I think there around €50ish.

Are you going to lamp or will it be mainly day-time shooting?

Hawke Night eye 3-9 x 50 illuminated reticle. Cost me about €110 and I find it perfect! I have a JLS Stalker moderator and it does a pretty damn good job, hard to beat in my opinion !

Id say it will be 90% shooting during the day.

I there any one here with a 455?
I assume its better to spend the bit extra for it rather than go for a 452. We intend to keep this gun for a long time!

SAK is the mod for the job.

As for scopes, I've hard enough time deciding on one for myself :D

I dont think anyone on here that owns a 452 will have a bad word to say about it ! I have a 452 in .17hmr the past 5 years and since day 1 I swore id never get rid of it , that hasnt changed to this day ! I had a 452 in .22 and I traded that for the 455 thumbhole just because I wanted something different. I have to say it is a heavy enough gun but it doesnt do anything the 452 didnt (except tire you quicker when carrying it) The .17hmr alone is a very accurate round before you get into any tech details about the gun that fires it. Saying that , you cant go wrong with any Cz model..

I think the best bit of advice ever given regarding scopes is this, look through as many as you can lay your hands on, preferably in the conditions you'll be using them in. In the shop or in good daylight any, well, most scopes will look good.

Big +1 there, Heariing nothing but good things about that scope and it can be got abit cheaper in the UK. I think it was Clive that got one for 200 euro here, cant remember where though

sak mod will do the job for you well too..

I would hesitate to recommend the Hawke. while they are ok, there are better scopes. Put as much as you can afford into the scope, that way you will get the best out of the rifle.

    another plus 1

And also 60-100 on a decent set of mounts so you wont have to re zero the scope every time she takes a slight bang off anything.

Don't skimp on the scope, you'll regret it in the long run.
Bushnell make great scopes, I've had a few of them on my rifles but now I've got a Vortex Viper on the HMR, its on a different level

I'm a fan of Bushnell range of scopes and have 5/6 of them here.
For your HMR a Bushnell Banner would do nicely say 4-12x40 or 6-18x50. These can be had new for under €200.

For mounts a set of Sportsmatch would do and again are cheap enough to buy.

Theres very little recoil from the HMR.

So unless you have deep pockets and can go for a more expensive scope the Banner range is OK. If you want to spend more then try out the 3200 elite Bushnell range.

Shooters always tend to 'Over Scope' their rifles here.

If you can stretch the budget mod choice for me is the wildcat (strip down for cleaning) important for HMR dirty round around €150 .Scope I have a Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40 great clarity & more than enough zoom ,good for lamping & day shooting respectively.Scope cost varies, can be got on Ebay around €300, rings Burris Zee €70 & your done .

For 200€ I would go with Vortex Diamondback 4-12x40 or 3.5-10x50.

In Bushnell range I would go rather with Trophy XLT and not Banner series.

Personal tip would also be that you should invest the same amount of money in optics and mounts as you did in the rifle.

I had a Hawke 4-12x44AO on my HMR originally. Got a Leupold 6-18x40 VXII on it now.

While the Leupold is obviously a better scope I can't say my results have been any better with it. The finer crosshairs are nicer when I'm shooting for groups but it's mainly used on rabbits and crows so that doesn't really matter a whole lot.

First they came for the socialists...

Personally I would advise holding off an the moderator and spending as much as possible on the scope at the moment.

Hi there. I have a 455 thumbhole varmint in .22lr. I find it super accurate and it feels great when you put it to the shoulder. It is a little heavy but i dont mind. I have a hawke 3-9x50 il scope on it and its grand. Obviously the more you spend on a scope the better the glass. You wont regret the 455 :)
