Expired Medical Card, Dentist visit

My medical card expired before Xmas and I didn't get it renewed because I was in college. I had to withdraw from college since and haven't sorted out the renewal yet.

I'm currently in extreme pain due to wisdom teeth, it's seriously debilitating, affecting my sleep and concentration. I can't wait to have my card renewed, I was just wondering would a dentist examine me and provide treatment for free on the condition of renewal of my medical card, or would I have to pay for the treatment and be refunded later?

I've seen this dentist before on my medical card, and I should be guaranteed a renewal. I really can't afford to pay for treatment, what can I do?

check here if it's definitely expired.

if it has, you will have to pay for treatment unfortunately for you. you may just require a prescription to settle the pain so it shouldn't be expensive.
not sure if the med card operates on a pay and claim back basis at all though.

It's definitely expired, barely have money for food at the moment so paying for treatment really isn't an option. I'll just call in person when they open and see what they can do for me.

If you meet the criteria for eligibility, have applied for the card and have provided all required documentation and have not received one, then you may have a case against the HSE for any medical expenses, based either on negligence on their part or based in public law on a breach of a legitimate expectation that their policy (of issuing cards within 15 days) has not been complied with. Of course, these cases require time and money to litigate.

Of course from a practical point of view this is not going to relieve your pain.

At the very least you would have a valid complaint to the Ombudsman. If however it comes down to you not submitting renewal application then you will have to bear the financial and/or other consequences yourself.

Wisdom teeth are a pain in the arse.
My wife had problems last year with them. With the medical card you will be put on a waiting list (=6 months plus). Nothing done before that- the operation is complicated and cannot be done in a normal practice.
She went private after waiting for three months and swallowing tons of pain killer- cost about 800 euros and it was done very quickly.
I advise you to go the same way- or you will be stuck with pain for months without end...
