So effectively we start semester 2 without knowing our results?

What email? The exam no. email? In the academic calender, student appeals commence 23rd Jan - what does this mean? (I'm a first year, so new to the exam timeline)...

    http://www.dit.ie/examinations/

Click whichever college is over you course, the click exam results.

    For example:
    - Kevin Street results aren't out till 8th February
    - But some of the Aungier Street results are out on 30th January, with the rest out on the 7th February
    - Mountjoy Square are out the 6th.

No info up as yet for Cathal Brugha or Bolton Street exams.

Your semester 1 results have no bearing on entering semetster 2, so it's fairly irrelevant (although desirable) that you'd get the results before starting back.

so lets say we fail an exam do we have to repeat?

Not if you overall grade at the end of the year is a pass

How do they come up with the overall grade?

Like say you failed your mid year, but passed you sessional by a sufficient amount that you weighted average grade was over 40, you'd still pass.
