I'm finding it very hard to choose which of my courses to put first. Both the courses are similar and suit me well i wouldnt mind doing either but one is in maynooth and the other in UCD! I was just wondering what the nightlife, accom, people etc. are like in each? Need to fill in the CAO.. Thankss in advance :)

It might help to know what course you're looking at.

From my personal experience of Maynooth and of (a lot of) friends going to UCD, I think Maynooth is the better place by far. It's smaller and more personable so you don't get lost in all the people, there isn't really any cliques like you see in UCD and everyone just tends to be nice and friendly to everyone else. Maynooth really is just like it's own small town.

The nightlife is brilliant, far better than Dublin imo, less packed and messy for the most part and of course cheaper. It's also easier and cheaper to find accommodation both on and off campus

I've studied at both and preferred Maynooth.

It had to do with a few factors, mainly the more amicable quality of the college, and the quality of the course i was studying.

However, I really enjoyed my time at UCD, and switching colleges was a really tough decision to make. It suffers from a bad image at times, but once you find your niche in UCD it can be a great place.

What are you thinking of studying?

Tbh, I don't think you lose either way. Both colleges have pluses, both have minuses. We're all pretty bias towards Maynooth I'd imagine. I'd recommend you visit each place and soak it all in.

Dont agree with your last point tbh. Dunno about other years but, this year the nightlife is,exactly how you put down dublin packed every night and mostly crappy.

Its overrated imo only the roost is any good and its always wedged. Its like, most towns nothing in comparison to dublins nightlife.
As for accommodation its cheap if you are rich especially campus who rob 38 weeks rent when there is 24 weeks lectures. And charge a fortune, the same as dublin.

That said the college is good and most people are grand. Truth is you will never know until you are in it and dont let anyone tell you different!

I live in Dublin this year. Maynooth is always far better night. If you think night in Mayn ooth are packed you haven't seen Dublin. Admittedly I haven't been out in Maynooth this year but last year and the year before were always great night and always cheaper.

And accommodation is definitely far cheaper. You do realise that Maynooth on campus is one of the cheapest University accommodation in Ireland? And ff campus is really good for what you get. I'm paying far more for an apartment here than I would for a room in a house in Maynooth and far more than campus too!

You're being awful expectant if you expect landlords to give you every non lecture week free? Lots of students stay up during study and exam weeks and even if they don't you still pay for it. To think otherwise is just stupid

So essentially you are saying it's a great night out this year when you haven't been out in Maynooth at all this year? Odd.

Well I was out last year in Maynooth and its worse this year, its far more packed exactly like you picture Dublin, especially since the Roost allowed free in on Thursdays, and Mantra is a ****ehole. The problem is probably too many students and not enough places to go out in.

On accommodation I never once mentioned landlords. I mentioned how the college rips you off on campus charging for 38 weeks in the year when there are only 24 lecture weeks. Even adding on holidays and exams they still add on weeks.

Not only that but paying between 96 euro and 110 euro a week for slums like some of the places on campus, is not exactly really good for what you get.

Bit of respect please, I don't even know what you are ranting on about I never said otherwise.

Looks like some people are a little over protective of the place.

No you have just made a stupid point. Campus charge for how long you live there, not how many lecture weeks there are. That is how renting works

Even still I'll say it again, we have some of the cheapest on campus accommodation. It may not be top class or sterling value but it's still perfectly adequate and nowhere near slums. Also starts at 90 for Village. You you see what they dump first years in DCU in for a lot more money

But landlords was some accidental linking in my head so apologies.

I meant to say out much* this year but I haven't had a bad time anytime I have been out. Seemed the same as last year to me. And nowhere near as bad as a night out in Dublin.
And the roost has always been free in on Thursday's since I've started in Maynooth

If you think that campus is cheap then you are living in make believe land, the only thing good about them is making friends. You're obviously rich or something if you think it's fair students have to pay for 8-10 weeks of high rent when they arent even there. You don't even have a response just an insult.

Not everything about Maynooth is great you know, don't take it so personal.

I neve said was campus was cheap. I said it was the cheapest in Ireland to university on campus accommodation.

Also a lot of students do stay up for nearly the full term

I'm not taking anything personally. Challenging a viewpoint is not taking anything personally

Fair enough you just seemed annoyed when you said my point was stupid!

Yeah a fair few seem to stay up depending on their exam timetable, dunno about holidays though it seems quiet enough even on fridays on campus. I've heard of a few people around though mainly those who've moved out of "home" for independance and all that. Dont think its for me though I miss home enough during the week lol

I like the place and all, I certainly dont regret coming to Maynooth, I would definitely pick it number 1 again if I had to. It has that personal feel to it and although Dublin has alot better in some ways, it is also alot worse in others. For me personally I've found it hard settling in, have a good enough group of friends so not all bad but I miss my friends at home alot. Its practically beside Dublin anyway unlike the other places as well.

    Sorry! :-)

Some people are just homebirds! It makes it harder to settle too.
I was the opposite. I love getting as far away from home as possible. Even Dublin is too close for me!

  • Site Banned Posts: 2,719 ✭✭✭DB10

Yep I'm sorry too got a bit heated there :)
Yeah I'm a homebird alright, all my friends seem to be the opposite! Then again gotta get used to moving out sometime I suppose, dont wont to be at home in my 30s I dont think! :D

So yeah it is good I suppose in that way. And at least I dont really have to commute too much !

    *waves white flag*

Exactly, you'll be avoiding going home in no time :-D

Commuting is a form of torture as far as I'm concerned

Lots of students stay up during study and exam weeks

XxMCRxBabyxX you were arguing in the last thread that it was acceptable for the library to be closed for xmas because all the students go home, no?

if i had the choice i would choose ucd. maynooth is a kip.
it pretty much shuts down at christmas: library, swimming pool, gym, on campus bar and restaurants...the place feels like its fcuking deserted.

theres no cycle lane linking it with leixslip which means cycling is out of the question half the year round unless you want to risk your life cycling to leixslip in the dark. this means your pretty much cut off from the city since there is a perfectly good cycle lane from leixslip to the city yet it fails to continue on a mere 6km to facilitate a national university with 6,000 students?

accommodation in maynooth is disgraceful for what you pay for. the landlords are dirtbags, half of them are criminals who like nothing more than swindling deposits from young students.

the night life in maynooth is an absolute drag. ive gotten laid once or twice the last couple of years ive been here. the 'town' consists of one stretch of road with pubs on either side and the epicentre of maynooth consists of a crappy little shopping centre. (you'll notice a sign to right as you enter the shopping centre which says PLEASE DO NOT SIT ON THE WINDOW LEDGE :pac: )

for the size of maynooth, crossing the road can be an absolute nightmare. coming from the straffan road, you'll find yourself most mornings waiting at traffic lights to facilitate the mass of traffic. i sometimes think the m50 would be easier to cross

and finally the locals...all i can say is LOL

They probably shut because everyone goes home at Christmas, no? Either that or everyone is secretly trying to avoid you because you're depressing to be around.

This is all your fault. Get a car not a bike. Bikes are useless :rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:.

Do you actually live in rented accommodation in Maynooth? If so then they are probably only being dirtbags to you because you're so annoying.

Stop being such a Negative Niall all the time. I never once bothered with the traffic lights. I don't know anyone that did, only the innocent Americans here for the first time and afraid of j walking did and they copped on after a week.

The m50 would not be easier to cross, don't be so stupid. There is no traffic there at all and if there is then it's all stacked up making crossing infinitely easier.
and finally the locals...all i can say is LOL

Do you want to know what they think of you? It probably begins with a w.

Why do you bother posting on this forum about Maynooth? Especially if it makes you so angry all the time. It's kinda sad really. Go find something better to do and stop being a fool all your life.

The nightlife is brilliant, far better than Dublin imo, less packed and messy for the most part and of course cheaper. It's also easier and cheaper to find accommodation both on and off campus

Disagree, Night life is way better in dublin. when I did my postgrad in NUIM I went out a lot in dublin (before they cut the nightlink rute) Dont get me wrong, Maynooth isnt a bad place to go out, but dublin has a lot more choice

of course you pay rent during ther holidays, its a 9 month lease. Ive never heard of students not paying rent during holidays! 96-110 a week  thats crazy, those appartments arnt fantastic to say the least. I payed 80 a week for a single room in Beaufield when I was there. Much nicer than those appartments!

It's obviously a personal thing. I just find that Dublin nightclubs are always packed so much that you can't move, people are always messily hammered and it costs a fortune between getting in somewhere, paying for drinks and then taxis everywhere
