Must-stay hotels in Istanbul

Long story, short . . . I'm going to be in Istanbul for a long weekend in March with mini-zag (age 12) with some free flights I have to use up. I'm quite looking forward to being there, but I don't know too much about the place other than clips from James Bond and assorted other movies.

Since the flights are free, I don't mind pushing the boat out a little on the hotel to make sure we really enjoy ourselves, although I gather that the Turkish Lira is doing even worse than the Euro and this works in my favour and I may not have to push the boat too far.

Does anyone have any suggestions for must-stay hotels in the centre of Istanbul ? Since it's only a long weekend, it has to be walking or tram distance to interesting places. Based on movies, etc . . . I gather waterfront is the place to be, but I'm open to suggestions.

    Cheers,

    z

I could recommend a hotel where not to stay allright!
Just check it up on Tripadvisor, you won't go too far wrong with the top 20 there.

Hotel Evsen must be one of the best in Istanbul. The hotel staff are second to none, will help you in any way and are friendly with good English. Rooms are a little small, nice location too in a tourist area of the city.
