Fuel consumption question

    Hi folks,
I am in the process of looking for a bigger car. I think I have narrowed my search down to a Kia Sportage/ Santa Fe or Tuscan but I am open to suggestions on similar types.
My question would be am I mad to buy a petrol version. My annual mileage wouldn't be high but this year planning a road trip in Europe.
Anyone know what fuel consumption would be like on these choices ?

Any suggestion or opinions gratefully considered

    Thanks

Are you looking at a new or a second hand one? It would make sens to buy second hand petrol engined model, as it would be a good bit cheaper than Diesel.

Fuel economy in the Sportage would be in the range of 28mpg / 10l/100km.

It would be a 2005 or 2006 model I would be looking at

That 2.0 CRD diesel is a bollox of an engine, look elsewhere.

'05-on models of Tucson and Sportage share basically same engines and gearboxes and have the same weight, so fuel consumption is similar. Santa Fe is bigger and heavier, so it takes more fuel.

Yeah, the petrol model would always make sense if you do not do big annual mileage and if you buy second hand car.
All the cars that you suggested will return 25 to 30mpg, depending on your driving conditions.

Wouldn't touch a petrol either as you'd be better off marrying it with a "until death do us part" kind of agreement.

Not sure if the newer 2.2 in the Santa Fe is more reliable or in budget, but I've heard awful stories about the 2.0 diesel in them.

Tbh the petrol isn't much better either, I've heard of a good few engines going in them too, and they're hard got second hand and pricey. Oil pumps failing etc., but that's probably due to the Irish and their "don't maintain are car until it blow mind frame".

Well that wouldn't be me. I normally service my cars every 5-7k Kms.

Aye but it's the people that have had it before you.

My cousin had a 2.0 petrol Trajet, nothing but trouble and part were surprisingly dear, in the end the engine calved.

Bought a 04, and he's had similar hassle. I wouldn't leave him touch a diesel at the time as even main dealers told me not to:rolleyes:

2.2CRDI is a great reliable unit, the old man had a good few of them(Santa-Fe) on the fleet in work and they did big miles without any serious problems. The diesel would probably be nicer to drive in a car like the Santa Fe and would return better fuel economy. I'd go diesel even if I was doing a lower mileage. Nicer car and as LM said won't be as hard to sell in the future as a petrol one.

My friend at work drives the Santa Claus Diesel. It is only a 3-4 year old machine (owned from new) and he had the turbocharger replaced 3 times and the fourth time the engine blew and had to be replaced. So, as for the modern Diesel engine in that car, I would stay away.

+1 every time my mates 2.0 trajet had any little problem it cost a fortune.

And the diesel is a disaster, injectors, and oil pumps.
My brother in law had 3 clutches, 2 sets of injectors and one oil pump in a santa fe before the cam broke and it went boom! (company car 130k miles fsh)

have first hand ecperience of the Tucson CDRI 6 speed. no engine faults in 170000km but needed a clutch at 160.

IMO the newer engine is worth getting (mid 06 onwards) if youre going diesel.

The general feeling here is the Diesel is gonna be more costly in the long run...

Is that a yearly service due to low mileage?

I don't think you can really justify a cars economy based on a holiday that you have planned its a bit ridiculous to be honest!

Do you really need an SUV the costs just don't seem to make sense?

    How about an X3

X3 is out of my price range.
Obviously it's not just due to a holiday. I am currently driving a Toyota starlet which is not big enough for my needs. I am recently married and planning kids down the line. We have Toyota Yaris there too for the run arounds but need something bigger for other things.

Think I have made up my mind on a Kia sportage petrol

You are much more likely to get a well minded and small mileage petrol one rather than a diesel. Most have lots of miles and unless you get service history you could be stuck with a few big bills.
You may pick up a small mileage petrol one and the main depreciation will have happened already. Whatever you buy look carefully before buying because either one will be difficult to move on mainly because of the tax etc. :p
