VW Polo 1.9TDI -hissing?

    Evening folks,

Just wanted to pick a few brains if you don't mind! As the title says, I've got a 2003 VW Polo 1.9 TDI Sport 5 door with a ventilation problem.

When I turn on the hot or cold air from settings 1 - 4, I get a hissing sound coming from the passenger foot-well - which gets louder as the strength is increased. There is no noise when the air is off.

It feels like a pipe/connector has come loose but I'm no expert, and besides looking for the obvious of a hose of some sort hanging down in the foot-well  , I've no idea what it might be.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks,

    Cul.

Is there a coolant smell or is your coolant low?

If not put your hand on the floor and see if it's wet.

    Do that and come back

silly question, but are the air vents actually open, does this happen in all air positions? have you ever changed the pollen filter?

Limerick man - coolant levels are all fine & the carpets are bone dry.

Colm_mcm - yes all of the vents are open.

The sound gets increasingly louder as I move up through the strengths, and when I select the circulate button, its like a jumbo jet taking off.

I've uploaded a sound clip from off, to full power with circulation if its of any help here - http://dw4.convertfiles.com/files/0714439001326658774/vn-20120115-00004.mp3

does it have a pollen filter? if so it may be blocked. It's in the passenger foot well. you'll see two sliding clips on the right side of the footwell. Check if the hissing is coming from there.

    Thanks a million,
