Need to reset BMW dashboard warning light

The engine exhaust warning light has come on on the dash of my 2001 BMW 320ci and I need to clear it. I know what the problem is and I'll get it sorted but for now I want to clear the light. Is this possible without a diagnostic tool?

Or if I need the tool, can most garages do it or will I need to go to a BMW dealer? I'm off tomorrow so would like to do it then.

Surely it will just come back on as soon as you reset the light if the problem is still there?

I'd be thinking you need a code reader to clear that all the same.

Unless you repair the problem the light will just come back on again or may not switch of at all.

As above, it will need to be fixed before going about removing the light as it will come back on.

I don't know about bmws but when I needed switch off my engine management light I disconnected the battery for a few mins and reconnected. I had the problem fixed and the light stayed off.

In most cases the light will dissapear by itself after the problem is removed. On some cars it will go of after few engine startups

Hi just to clear up Afew things I do plenty of work on bm,s day in day out.disconnecting the battery won't clear the fault.secondly it most likely won't clear the fault if it's a serious fault and it's not fixed.(what is the fault I might be able to help u out) and any garage with half decent diagnostics should be able to clear that even in under the eobd section.but ur at Notting paying someone to clear it with out repairing things seriously.so what's the fault

It's a misfire in one of the cylinders. Had the problem before, brought it to a garage and they diagnosed. The light cleared itself the same day though, after a while. Same symptoms today but after a drive home and several restarts it's still there (the light, the car drives perfectly). I just want to get rid of the light as it only ever happens in a blue moon. I'll get it sorted when I get some cash together - just want to clear the light right now.

It's a petrol. The light cleared almost immediately the last time but I've no idea why it has lingered so long this time.

Would most garages have code readers capable of reading BMWs?

How old is the car? Most cars in the last 12 years or more have OBD 2, any diagnostics equipment any garage has can read / reset OBD 2 codes...

You could buy one yourself if it is an intermittent problem that is not doing any harm :)

on the e39 you can reset the light with a piece of wire between two of the pins on the socket, forget which ones though.

I think you are mistaking with oil and inspection indicator.
