Hi guys need some help please....

My mams netbook has just gone a bit mental....

it is failing to load up so I waited til I got the first screen and hit F12.... selected hard drive and tried to load up from there....

now I am getting a message that says: system32\drivers\pci.sys missing or corrupt.

Because this is a netbook there is no disc drive to try a restore disc....

Anyone help please? It was working perfectly this morning.....

Try running the system recovery option, tell us the exact netbook model number and we can help further! ;)

If the operating system is xp, I've come across this reboot loop before.

This link fixed it for me every time.

    http://saveme.danfischbach.com/

It involves creating two disks. First is a Vista boot disk (I know it's for xp but it works), and the other is his own fix.exe.

any other ideas i could try would be greatly appreciated.... she is a slave to her laptop but has no idea about the technical side of things..... :D

Have you tried system restore? f8 on boot, into safe mode. If you get it loaded, back up any important files and try system restore.

yea and it starts running in safe mode with a list of files on it, then it says:

windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt system32\drivers\pci.sys

looks like your windows xp installation is dying if system files start to corrupt.... if u do sucessfully get the poster above's fix to work i highly recommend you run a backup of all your files.....get an xp disc and f'disk the laptop and to a clean install of xp and your programs. It will give ya a nice clean registry to go screw up slowly for another year or 2

Since you don't have an optical drive, you could use http://www.pendrivelinux.com/yumi-multiboot-usb-creator/ to create a bootable USB stick with a Linux distribution on, to save any files. You'll need another USB stick to save to as the booting one is mounted readonly. 4GB would be big enough.

http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=56403886 may be of interest if you want to try replacing the pci.sys file, using the bootable stick idea.
