Was walking threw temple bar last night and the first time I ever seen a Garda patrolling the streets with a dog, it was good to see. Might cut down on trouble in the area, has this being going on for a while or new???

I've seen them before in the centre but it's an unusual sight.

I was just thinking yesterday as to how the "Guard Dog" industry used to be quite big here. Most companies with a yard used to have the dog delivered up in the evening and "on duty" till the morning. Seems to me that this is not so common anymore? Technology replacing the hound!

Dogs need to be walked. They will take them out wherever they are.

Seems to be very rare to Garda Dog Unit to be seen out patrolling on foot only time ive noticed them is on large scale searches or public order incidents..

Is it commem for members of the Gardai to work with this unit?

Liability is possible a big thing now for security company not using them leaves them open to civil suits I reckon if dog

Happens here usually its a Drug dog followed by about 12-16 Officers.

It can fairly empty out a street full of people.

Ive heard the same thing for a long time now Have A Go Hero.. About expanding the unit.

The British model of having multiple on duty units there to support frontline policing operations would be the way forward all you need is to watch programs like this to see how the Brits operate..

A good story of a Garda Dog Handler & his partner ;)

yeah iv seen a lot of those type of programmes.... i think their presence would be a huge deterent around cities for anti-social behaviour..i for one would think about running from a dog!!

Ha Ha, That's funny, I'd bet on there being many a panicked person fleeing the street with their drugs..

Can't say I'v ever noticed dogs with cops around before, But I wonder would Heroin stand out to a dog or would it be the usual easy pickings Hash, Weed as they obviously have very strong smells.

Just go up to Dublin Airport any day and you'll see the Airport Police Dog Unit out patrolling they follow the British Police model of supporting the general Airport Police operating in the terminals when required etc... Of course their jurisdiction and policing model/requirements differs to the Garda's..

Would say it was public order...

However at least an hour of their shift is dedicated to "walkies" time so it could have been any dog sniffing the lamp posts and chasing pigeons.

Cant remember how much of their shift is for exercise but the dogs are very very well looked after.
