The more "Up to Date" Open Office as it is is Libre Office. So well worth checking it out. When Oracle took over Sun there was a disagreement with both the OO team & Oracle so the OO team formed their new project Libre Office

Don't forget, with OpenOffice, and prob Libre too, to make sure you save your work as a particular document type, not the default, if you want to send it to someone else. Probably "Word 97/2000 .doc" for Word docs.

    They need Java too.

I am going to prepare my file and bring to friends and transfer it to word, don't want to hog my friends pc for the day but they won't mind me taking it for a few mins. so save my file as "name" .doc? Is that correct?

Google Docs is an option as well, no need to download anything.

Libre Office Writer is compatible with everything and documents created or edited using it can be saved into many different formats. I've been using it for years and have never had a problem with it or it's predecessor OO regarding other office suites opening documents, Excel sheets or presentations. Recommended as a bargain at €0.00!

You can create it in Google Docs and download as a word document or send it as an attachment in an email.
