Hi all, just wondering what may be causing my internet connection to be so slow? It happens on and off all the time and its getting annoying. Went too speedtest.net and this is what i got 5 mins ago

normally its about 19.- download and 3.- upload speed. I'm using a wireless connection in the house and nobody else is here using it so i'm baffled?

    Thanks!

I had that same problem, even tho u get a good wireless signal, there still seems to be interference on the network at various times, only way to solve this, is to change the channel, 11 works best for me.

Thanks for the reply. There is a good few connections around me alright and the majority of them if not all are UPC. Could that be the problem? And how do I check the channel or change it?

    Thanks again!

Download inSIDer 2.0 it will tell you your current channel and all those around you. You can then select the least used on or one that is not used in you router settup page.

Okay out of 8 of us 4 are using channel 6 and the other 4 on channel 1. The two closest too me are on channel 1 (all surrounding wireless connection). I suppose ill have to see what's going on properly when the speed is slow again?

    Its not too bad now:

assuming u have the cisco, http://192.168.1.1 click ''set up'' and under 'wireless', click ''basic'' u can change channel there.
I used to be on channel 2 and had slow ups constantly,
Changed to 11 and all seems to be good.

I leave both blank and click "ok"
somebody may have set a username and password on your 2425
Only thing left to do is reset modem to default settings.

If I change this channel will it effect any of the other users in the house? i don't want to go doing anything without mentioning it to everyone else first :P

By the way its on auto at the moment so should it not automatically find the best channel by itself?

for a start connect to the router directly with a cable, disconnect everythin else (phones, gaming console's etc) and do a speedtest. If the speed is what you should expect its a wireless issue,if the speed is still brutal its more than likely a network issue/fault.

Also dont have any torrent software running(either downloading or uploading)as they suck your bandwidth up

The auto channel is 6 on the cisco ( well on mine anyway) and one of the most common among near by routers, channel 6 for me was very problematic, constant disconnects and slow ups... if you are going ahead with changing channel, make sure you have an Ethernet cable handy incase you lose connectivity and need to change channel back.
You could test various channels but, 1, 2, 6, 11 work best.

Cheers, i have a funny feeling it is interference. There is a good few UPC wireless connections around me (up to 10 at times) and a lot seem to be working off the same channel (6). I always turn off bit torrent when not using it but ill mention it to the house mates tomorrow too. Also I havn't got the connection to connect directly so i'm sure it will be okay to just try a different channel nobody else is using and see does it make a difference?

The problem is only intermittent but when it is there it lasts for maybe 2 hours at a time.

Just after seeing this maybe I should leave it unless I find an ethernet cable?
