Buying a car with expired tax?

As per the thread title, I know someone who is getting a car shortly. However, the tax for the car expired at the end of last month.

I did a search here, and what I found is that he will have to pay tax for January since the change of ownership is for sometime this month.

What I want to know is how does he go about renewing the tax, seeing as the renewal form would have gone to the current owner?

Sorry if this has been asked before and didn't see it:o.

No renewal form needed, just go into the tax office with details of car and they will tax it there and then, even if your friend hasn't received the tax book for Shannon.

wait for book to come back, get a tax renewal form RF100 and tax it.

He could ask the current owner for the renewal form and go into the tax it himself if he doesn't want to wait.

Thanks folks. How long will it take for Shannon to send out the log book?

Can he get insured on the car now? I thought there was something about you only being able to be insured on a car once it is taxed?

Shannon can take from 10 days to 3 weeks depending how busy they are and they tend to be busy usually in January with new car registrations.

Never heard of not being able to insure a car without it being taxed.

What you can do is check here to see if it has been transferred over. As soon as it has they can use the forget pin link to tax online.

Can he get insured on the car before Shannon realise that the ownership of the car is being changed? He's not going to drive it until it's taxed, but I'd like to know all the same.

Yes, that's nothing to do with Shannon, he just rings his insurance company and transfers his existing policy if he has one, or sets up a new one if he doesn't.

The insurance shouldn't look for tax, but I was in your friends situation it was impossible for me to tax the van because it was over the christmas ask the seller to tax I suppose but how is your friend meant to get it home if he is not going to drive it till its taxed?

    Great, thanks for that.
