    Hi,
I just wanted to ask whether providing a receipt for payment when requested is a legal requirement?
    I thought it was...

It is not a legal requirement, though it is considered best practise

I'm ok because I have a trail of payment but how else do you prove payment if you receive no receipt...

I have been requesting a receipt for a rather large paymant off a solicitor for a good while now to no avail. They never say no. Just don't respond.

I have to say this alone would put me off using the company again

If its for consumer legislation requirements a cheque stub or a cc statement is acceptable as proof of purchase doubt that would apply here though

I always thought that if it was a cash payment then a receipt was obligatory if the purchaser wanted one. Any other type of payment can be traced.

Especially if it is a dealing with a business either as purchaser or seller - or else, someone is working in the black economy.

Have you requested the receipt by making a request in writing to him?

If the retailer charged VAT, there's an obligation to issue a receipt.

I have written to him a number of times and also forwarded an e-mail to 3 other employees to no avail.
I have the trail of requests. I paid by cheque so yes I have a trail there. I did pay VAT which is on the invoice. It was for a company so I need to claim the VAT back. I can use the invoice for this as it has the break down. I just can not understand the difficulty in issuing the receipt.
They are a solicitors. Working out of a building close to the centre of town... I was not very happy with there service anyway and this has just annoyed me more so...

You have the invoice, why do you need a receipt?

Because an invoice is not proof of payment ... and because I can not understand why someone would refuse to provide one when payment was received

Write a letter (a query, not a complaint) to the Law Society of Ireland, asking if it is the norm to not receive a receipt for payment.

CC the solicitors (send them a copy of the letter you posted to the Law Society).

Do this in writing, not by email - you will be amazed at what CC's a typed letter can do.

    Complaints and Client Relations Section,
    Law Society of Ireland,
    George's Court,
    George's Lane,
    North King Street,
    Dublin 7.

If you get no response, send a query letter to the VAT Section of the Revenu Revenue, again CC'ing the solicitors.
